Drawing on the familiar analogy of putting on our own oxygen masks first in an airplane emergency, I highlight that we cannot effectively support others if we ourselves are in distress or depleted. The act of self-care is not selfish; rather, it is a vital step that empowers us to contribute positively to the lives of others without feeling overwhelmed or resentful.
Throughout the episode, I also address common misconceptions and guilt surrounding self-care practices. Many tend to prioritize external responsibilities over their own well-being, leading to exhaustion or anxiety. I urge listeners to reflect on their own lives and check in with themselves—assessing how they feel, what activities they engage in for self-care, and identifying any gaps in fulfilling their personal needs. This process can be aided by journaling and self-reflection, which can illuminate areas that may require more attention.
