Very clever storytelling
Imagine if Professor X was a therapist instead of a professor... That's essentially the premise of this show, told through recordings of therapy sessions with Dr. Bright and her assorted patients, all of whom have special powers. The individual patients' stories are interesting in their own right, but in later episodes a bigger overall story starts to emerge that pulls the whole thing together.
