“Great podcast! Jamie speaks clearly and personably, presenting a narrative that is both informative and enjoyable. Plus, he starts with the first human inhabits of Britain - as someone with little background knowledge of British history, I've found that very helpful. My only complaint - his account, like most histories, tells little of women or their roles in cultural change. It focuses on battles, warriors, and generals, and only those women who fought or led armies (i.e. Boudica) are described. Even his more quotidian descriptions - e.g. what the Britons looked like and how they dressed - focus almost exclusively on men. I'd love an account that more explicitly acknowledges the role of women in maintaining and changing societies! Any historical account without women - no matter how compelling or well told - is incomplete.”Read full review »
