This podcast is super nostalgic…my Mom introduced it to me, and I have been in love ever since. Give it a listen!!

I very much enjoyed this series as a child. I hope they do the rest of the books. I watch the movie that was made from this first book several years ago. It did not do well because it did not follow the spirit this book. But this reading of it was enchanting. I had a lot of trouble not listening...Read full review »

If you want a good adaptation, go to audiodrama, which sticks close to the words, leans into the music implied by the book, and simplifies only to clarify. Changes are well-judged, few, and added with a light touch, (I liked the coda), Will is excellent, and I do believe that's Dame Harriet...Read full review »

I loved these books as a child and loved reading them aloud to my own kids. This is a marvelous adaptation ! Please do the rest of the books!

Read the series in 1981 when I was 11, like Will, and it affected me profoundly. Love it still, and ‘tis the season! 🥰🎄

This was one of my favorite childhood books. Loved listening to this dramatization. 💜

This could have been twice as long. As cut as it is, there is a very little character depth and continuity, meaning key scenes feel rushed and shallow. The production value is great, but way too short of an adaptation.

I love it soooo much! This has such emmersive sounds!

Never read it and I shouldn’t have had to in order to enjoy it. Lots of stories are read for podcasts and turn out great. This one is not good. Lacking depth and detail and way too rushed. I care so so little about this kid and I can’t keep track of each character. Maybe if I had read it, I’d...Read full review »

This is one of the best books I’ve ever listened to

A great audio dramatization of a great book! So glad they made this!
Trilolight via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 03/19/23
I haven’t read the source material but this audio adaption, despite great production, sound and overall ‘packaging’ is very much lacking in any kind of real story or characterisation. The main character goes from zero to hero in a matter of minutes as we’re quickly pulled through a series of...Read full review »

A wonderful story to accompany me through a day’s gardening.

What a wonderful series - the absolute highlight of this dark midwinter period!

Great storyline and the way the voice actors make it sound like a movie. Satisfying to listen to and actually gave me chills!

I loved this book as a child and have given copies of it to many friends over the years. I am really enjoying this evocative adaptation that bristles with menace.

The audio experience, acting, and production were top notch. But the story was unoriginal and felt way too abbreviated. I have not read the original to compare, but I’m not recommending this to others. Would love to see the approach used with better material.

I’ve loved this book for a long time and have read it many times. This is an incredible adaptation, and you really feel like you are there with Will. It’s very immersive, and I actually jumped thinking there was someone behind me talking at one point. The production truly captures the eerie...Read full review »

This radio play adaptation of ‘The Dark Is Rising’ is amazing. The story is lovingly adapted and the wondrous soundscape makes you feel immersed in the action. A brilliant audio epic.

I really enjoyed this adaptation & would be so happy if any (all?!) of the other books in the series were similarly produced

I vaguely remember reading this book as a child, and I enjoyed the series. Good music.

The production of this classic book of fantasy is well done. However, I had forgotten how very poorly written this book was. As someone who was a child in the 1970s, I remembered it as something more Zen what it is. The Dark is so easily defeated, and the 11 year-old so quickly triumphant the n...Read full review »

A beautifully crafted adaptation of this classic tale. A Midwinter treat.

I am so enjoying every episode. The narrator and actors are perfect. It feels just like the book did when I read it as a teenager. The music and sound scape are so evocative of this stellar time in fiction. The Owl Service next please❤️

Brilliantly adapted version, evocative and skilfully retold by the cast and soundtrack engineers I would go with the headphones recommendation to get the most from the story A fitting tribute to a classic story that’s never until now had the treatment that it deserved

Well, despite the special use of sound I have found this too disjointed to listen to and enjoy. There have been better versions in the past so I was disappointed here. It is a great story though.

At last - an adaptation done with the love and care the story deserves.

Beautifully crafted and presented. I was drawn in from the start and love the storytelling and the characterisation. We need more of this sort of thing.

Susan Cooper’s stunning stories have defied the narrow capabilities of modern entertainment media until now.
