RPG Crusoe
What a fantastic find! Like Dirk and his old mates, I’ve recently rediscovered gaming after a long hiatus. Thankfully no fellow grognards bought my rpgs when I decided to stick them on ebay so I ended up reading the rulebooks and scenarios again and sending my tendrils out into the Podcast feeds for anything rpg oriented. I listened to a lot of US power-gamer live-play feeds etc and was still humming and hawing about whether or not to actually start playing again. Then I discovered The Gorgnard Files! Dirk and his mates discuss and reminisce about the glory days of classic rpgs from the 80’s and onwards, White Dwarf and game mechanics. Instead of the sometimes prevalent 'intellect jocks’ on US podcasts (only some of them - I don’t want to generalise), listening to The Grognard Files is like having a blether with your gaming mates in the pub. Listening to The Grognard Files has given me the impetus to actually get out of my armchair, stop merely reading the rulebooks and actually start gaming again. And it’s every bit as much fun as my memory and The Armchair Adventurers’ would suggest! And then even something unexpected and new . . . whoever would have thought the Bolton accent could be so addictive? The aural equivalent of rubharb-crumble and custard, I find myself not only smiling at the tones but translating what others are saying to me into a Bolton-esque patois, ‘talking bobbins’ about this and that. The only awful thing about The Grognard Files is that Dirk and his mates aren’t being payed by some wealthy benefactor to issue new episodes daily, rather than monthly. Fantastic stuff! Keep it up guys!Read full review »

The Grognard Files is a warm and personal look at the early times of the RPG hobby. It is focused on the UK scene, and as White Dwarf was a big part of my formative years, even a Swedish rpg player feels profoundly at home. The host is soft and understatedly funny, and the choices of themes is...Read full review »

Like the hosts of this podcast I was well into RPGs in the early 80s, living in North-West England. I was a couple of years younger than these guys but many of the people I played with were the same age as them - so the show brings back some very vivid memories and I played a lot of the...Read full review »
