A Top-Notch History Podcast
Robin Pierson's podcast, "The History of Byzantium," is a history of the Byzantines which is not, itself, Byzantine. This clear and lively account does a great service for its audience, finding and following a bright narrative thread through a strange coiling maze; never drifting into the many, dark thickets of intrigue and controversy which threaten to derail any history of this colorful and bizarre epoch. Mr Pierson has also achieved something remarkable in the way of podcasting. This is not recycled radio. It is the work of an individual, not a committee — some of its admirable clarity may be attributed to the unity that comes from a single narrative voice. The audience, the subject matter, and the point of view of the storyteller shape it, not the priorities of a big broadcast organization.Read full review »
