Informative, Balanced, and Humorous
This is pretty much my favorite podcast. (The only competition is The Bugle, which is an entirely different genre and hard to compare.) The episodes are informative and wonderfully explained as well as deeply researched. Controversial items are identified and the nature of the debate is usually explained in some depth, which is really nice to hear and adds to the professionalism and to the value. I've listened to too many history podcasts that were either straight versions of what (may have) happened or even had a particular view to push and never acknowledged it. Not here. To be fair, David does sometimes have his own preferred view, but he makes it pretty clear that it is his view and not necessarily the only one. There is also a nice depth to this podcast that you don't always get. The episodes aren't just tales of battles, they dig into the social and political movements behind the events. Historical events are seldom about a single battle or moment, but are almost always part of much larger forces. It's important to keep an eye on why the exciting bits happened as well as what actually did happen. I should also add that the story-telling of this podcast is uncommonly good, too. The delivery is easy to follow and there's a good sense of humor embedded that enriches the experience and makes it a little more human. This is a podcast I'm happy to recommend to my colleagues in the history department as well as to anyone else. Subscribe, you won't regret it.Read full review »

This podcast is better even than "The History Of Rome" which was my favourite podcast. What is more is that in my opinion this is better than...Read full review »

Just as The History of Rome looks to be winding down, along come this podcast whose beginning is the Roman evacuation of Britain. Mr. Crowther mixes excellent summations of historical events with wit and charm. History podcasts understandably tend to focus on the political events and leaders, but...Read full review »
