I love love love this podcast. The history of England has always been vague and confusing but David explains almost year by year what happened and how it fit together …or not. It sounds dry but it’s fascinating and entertaining the way he creates stories out of what historians know and don’t...Read full review »

Informative, interesting, funny and familiar. I keep catching up and then starting again. How David manages to make such a ginormous subject relevant and clear (ok he does digressions within digressions!) with a wry sense of humour is beyond me. Highly recommend to anyone.

I’m still on the Anglo Saxons and catching up but I love the scholarship and witty delivery.

This is a go to for me. It is entertaining and educational and the more I listen, the more I get into it. The companion website has tons of resources and is a great addition to help out Americans like me who don’t know where anything is in England. LOL.

This podcast has been a revelation that I have enjoyed during longish drives of late. It’s told with a wonderful wry sense of humour. I sneak a listen at many an odd hour. As a schoolboy I disliked English History intensely. I couldn’t see the point in having to memorise what kings came when and...Read full review »

History of England is brilliant. Amusing, smart, wears its learning lightly. But full of depth and insight.

Great podcast series. Episode length is convenient; content is well researched and the delivery is light hearted and easy to follow. And lots of episodes to work through; looking forward to listening to them all.

Thank you for the podcast to which I always return. The acting out of scenes, the dramatics, the witty bits, the characterizations, the recreation of each period in the history of England … it’s just the most engaging “history of England” chat that exists.

Can’t believe I’ve never reviewed the show before. I’m a professional historian and David Crowther is an excellent host. Very knowledgeable (where does he keep that information? How does he keep track of all of it? What is his brain like? Truly amazing.). He has a great voice I am quite jealous...Read full review »

I enjoyed this podcast for the most part, except when it became clear that - ho hum - women are judged more harshly for their actions than men by the narrator. Emma of Normandy is frowned upon for being less than motherly while generations of men who slaughtered and raped their way across the...Read full review »

i stopped listening a while ago because this has become boring and tedious. this podcast will be stuck in the the 17th century for the rest of the 2020’s and the 2030’s who knows. just a guess on my part. too bad, the first few years were quite good.

Love this podcast. He presents facts, but does not make it boring. I love the Tudor period, currently listening to season 5 eps 5- 30, 225 over all. One correction I believe Charles V was Katherine of Aragon’s nephew not uncle.

Discovered this pod cast late last year and listened to all the episodes - more than a decades worth so strap in - in a few months. David has such a love for the subject but doesn’t get (too) entangled in weeds. He makes a good attempt to deal with difficult subjects such as the ‘relationship’...Read full review »

David Crowther is a brilliant podcaster. He tells English history like the cracking yarn it is, with large dollops of wicked humour and dry wit. For those that want a less detailed narrative he has created At A Gallop episodes, which I listen to as a refresher and summary of the previous bunch of...Read full review »
