“This is very accessible, almost friendly podcast. Mike has a really pleasant manner and the tone of the show is like sitting down with a knowledgeable friend who wants to share his enthusiasm. He also has a dry sense of humor that crops up from time to time. The content is also very strong. This is a general introduction to a very complex and detailed subject and Mike doesn't attempt to provide a deep, scholarly comparison of sources. Rather, he's telling a story for people who do not necessarily know anything about Roman history, and he's telling it well. That is not to say he doesn't provide real substance. For example, he spent six episodes on the Second Punic War, which gave him the time to at least walk around the weeds, if not get all the way down into them. If you have had some university level courses in Rome and are familiar with the material, this will serve as a entertaining refresher. If you don't know much about Rome, this is a terrific introduction. There are many history podcasts out there. This one is in the top echelon. Even if you have minimal interest in the subject (and, really, who isn't interested in the Romans to some degree?) this production is well worth your time.”Read full review »
