Great summary of Yugoslav history from the arrival of the Slavs in the 8th century to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and WW2. Covers the history in great detail and provides a neutral perspective.

One of the best history podcasts I’ve listened to Unfortunately it stops early in WW2, PLEASE come back and finish the story

It looks like this podcast has come to an end. The author in their last episode said there would be new episodes in 2023. We were just getting into the really good stuff.

A well researched podcast dealing with the very complicated history of the Balkans and countries comprising the former Yugoslavia.

One of my favorite podcasts, always very interesting to listen to! I wish it updated more often though. Then again, the host said that she’s finishing up a new episode so yay, hype!

Hi Alex, I hope you see this review. My fiancée and I want to thank you for the effort you’ve gone to so far on your podcast. We’re 5 weeks into a trip around the Balkans and your podcast has given us an incredible insight into the history and culture of the area, as well as helped so much in our...Read full review »

This podcast is unlike anything I have listened to in a very long time! It is very well put together and the story telling is relatively humerus but still telling the real history of the region! You HAVE to listen to this!

Alex, I love your show! I’ve listened to it twice, and it was just as good the second time XD I started listening while traveling in Croatia, and it has inspired me to want to travel to the rest of the Balkans as well. Please keep going! Can’t wait to continue the story. Much love from...Read full review »

My husband and I were on vacation in Croatia and Bosnia and in our quest to better understand the region, discovered this podcast. It’s really well scripted, with good information, and is told in a way that is engaging and pulls you along. We’re only through season one and are already back home,...Read full review »

As a native Croatian speaker with some familiarity of historical places and people, I could not understand some of the references made because of the pronunciation. I appreciate the research that went into this, but am very disappointed with how little attention the host paid to pronunciation.

I wanted to find out more about Croatia on a recent trip (it turns out Croatian history is inextricably linked to the other Balkan states) so I gave this a go. I was astounded by the depth of knowledge and research for the region and listened for lots of back-to-back episodes. It would be so easy...Read full review »

Thank you very much for this exceptional history of the Slavic Balkans, the Ottoman and the AustroHungarian empires. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested or has personal ties to the region. Well done Alex! This is an absolute masterpiece.

As a Croatian-American, I’ve always wanted to learn more about my culture, but the sources available in English are limited, especially if you want to go before the 1990s. And as important as the 90s are, my family left during the WWI era, so my own ties with the region predate the conflicts of...Read full review »

I picked up this podcast after watching documentaries on the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 90s. I had no idea what an eventful history the region has had. If you’re interested in the Balkans, you’ll love this podcast. In depth, with thorough research putting together a cool podcast, without stat after stat dulling down the feelings of the time. I can’t wait for each podcast to come out. If you’re a history nerd like me, check this out.

I’ve been listening to history podcasts for years, and I read a lot of history, as well. This podcast is excellently done, both as podcasts are concerned, and also in the way it tells a historical narrative. 6 stars.

Great work Alex. Balkan history can be really fragmented and often driven by nationalist agendas but you manage to cut though all that rubbish and provide an unbiased account. Thanks so much!

Agree with above—great content! Just wish it wasn’t physically painful to listen to it! Reeeally needs to invest in some sound engineering. Seriously splendid work. From a Polish perspective, the history of southern Slavs was never really thought in school so it is super interesting to understand differences and similarities between the history of north and south of Slav lands:)

We started listening to this podcast on a road trip around Croatia, and it’s kept us company on quite a few road trips since! We’re really enjoying learning more about the history, and the way Alex presents is excellent - we find ourselves actively rooting for different figures!

Praise for the effort, in attempting to tell the history of Southern Europe with objectivity. Currently, there are almost no local historians who do not corrupt the historical study with political science, or worse, national ideology. They can not be read or referenced. For now, the local people...Read full review »
