We often focus on Abraham's kindness to others and his hospitality to strangers. These are traits we should emulate; we must consider ourselves servants. However, perhaps there is something else we need to consider. He did not let these men pass by his tent, which proved consequential. Was Abraham being presented with an opportunity to demonstrate a proper response?

As Noah marked a new beginning in human history, so did Abram. Called to leave Ur in Babylonia, Abram follows God, and through him, God establishes the people known as Israel. This nation, founded on faith, hope, and trust, is destined to inspire these values in others and be a blessing to all nations.

We were created to influence the earth to the degree that God's Creation would continue to function according to His purpose. Given stewardship and authority in order to accomplish His will. If He gave this command to mankind in the beginning -- understanding man's fall and the need to be redeemed -- will He not bring this purpose to pass?

Who Could Stand?
The portion we are about to read follows the warnings in Deuteronomy 28 & 29. It's understandable that the people would be alarmed, so Moses reassured them that, despite their sin, they were still standing before the LORD. The previous punishments were meant to restore them, not destroy them. Sadly, repentance is often only provoked by punishment. Repentance allows us to continue standing before Him.

Moses presents a clear choice between life and death, equating obedience to God’s commands with life and blessing, and disobedience with death and curses. This dichotomy is rooted in the fundamental decision faced by humanity from the beginning: the choice between the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Similarly, God set this choice before Israel, offering blessings for obedience and allowing the natural consequences of curses to follow disobedience.

Moses desperately prayed to enter the Promised Land, but God said ‘No.’ Why? Because Moses didn’t sanctify God in the eyes of the people. Despite his plea, God told him to let it go and prepare Joshua to fulfill what he could not. Ever wonder what happens when God says ‘No’ to us?

This portion begins the final book in the Torah, Deuteronomy, spoken just before they entered Canaan. Moses recounts Israel's journey from Egypt to crossing the Jordan. He reminds them of God’s commands, outlines boundaries, and gives his final words. D’varim is not just a review; Moses teaches and elaborates on the Torah.
