This is an unmissable jaw dropping account of an eccentric British family moving to a Nicaraguan Island frequented by drug runners: What could go wrong? This was such a full on experience for all involved that a Channel 4 TV documentary ‘No Going Back’ was pulled and can’t be viewed anywhere. I...Read full review »

I made it about three minutes in before the constant faux-clever, snarky asides were driving me nuts. I couldn’t take a whole show of them so I head to quit.

She deserves it all, I can’t believe the cuckold of a husband would tolerate what happened to him

Totally bonkers. You can’t make this stuff up. Great, balanced, hilarious, storytelling brought to life with the insertion of audio clips from hours of video.

I would recommend, well recorded. I hope production make more like this

Such an exciting listen - it has all the elements of real life human drama - love, loss, longing. I would listen to Alice Levine reading a shopping list - nuff said 🤓

I would happily listen to Alice Levine read the phone book but the constant sound effects and extended intros/outros ruined the vibe a little. The story is fascinating but at times felt overly sympathetic to a family who were blatantly racist and whose behaviour was abhorrent.

Loved the weaving of two very different women’s stories and the political element of settlers grabbing land that isn’t theirs couldn’t be more relevant today

Wow
What a story! Crazy to think it’s based on truth. The production and acting is very well done, so much so I had to keep checking to see if the story was true.

I loved this series. It was intriguing and entertaining. After reading the other reviews, i don’t know why people gave a poor rating for the hosts accent. She just isn’t from the US… don’t get bent out of shape, people. lol. She is wonderful and her accent is lovely.

Is this a comedy? Or a thriller? Or a who-dunnit? Is it fiction or non fiction? The actual plot is really interesting but I can’t get past the narrator. She’s talking in such a jokey way “hashtag” comments that it kind of feels slightly disrespectful to all involved. I want to like it but I...Read full review »

Too bad the narrator didn't take the time to learn how to say Nicaragua - typical colonial ignorance. Good story none the less.Read full review »

I really enjoyed this podcast. I found it well put together and liked how they reminded us of who the characters were. I liked the stories of Maria the lawyer fighting for indigenous rights and Jane fighting for her island. Unbelievable story really!

I would not bother. Full of ads and badly written!

Absolutely riveting story. Well researched and well told. I binge-listened in one day.

Okay story, got hung up on the extra syllable the narrator adds to Nicaragua, over and over and over and overrrrrr again. Story is…alright. Felt like it didn’t really go anywhere

I don’t listen to Wondery+ podcasts usually because they’re filled with annoying voices. I gave this one a go since the host is British and it wasn’t enough to convert me. Poor storytelling and narration and absolutely assaulted with ads. Don’t waste your time.

Yet again we have a story that is ruined by poor writing and narration. “And Jane, well Jane, she’s just impossible to ignore” bleurghhhhh. I dont understand this incessant need to dramatise in wonder podcasts with fictional descriptions and sound effects. The facts of the story are interesting...Read full review »

Sure pronunciation is a bit different from what most “westerners” expect however I feel that the telling of this story was done very well. Gripping from beginning to… end? Not much of an ending to satiate the craving of conclusion but an ending none the less.

I think you have to wait and listen to this is a binge, it’s barely worth listening to a 30 minute episode when at least 1/3 of it is commercials.

I liked following the two women’ stories and comparing their quests while they never met and were standing on different sides of the fence.

Fab and Fascinating podcast brilliantly put together in my opinion! Really enjoyed it.

I will enjoyed the series because the episodes were not terribly lengthy and they were told with some tongue and cheek humor interjected. It’s actually a fascinating story because who amongst us hasn’t wanted to just find a deserted island and steal away and live the rest of our lives and peace...Read full review »

There are a lot of reviews about the pronunciation of Nicaragua. Come on - the narrator is also from a country that somehow pronounces aluminum like al-u-min-ium, so ya know… 🤷‍♀️ Aside from that, I thought this story was fascinating and very well produced. The reporter did a great job weaving...Read full review »

Interesting story, but it is extremely distracting and almost offensive how every person in this story seems allergic to pronouncing Nicaragua even remotely correctly.

Just terrible! Please learn how to say Nicaragua correctly!!!!! How can you host a podcast and you don’t know how to pronounce the name of the country the story takes place at. Embarrassing!!!!!!

Sorry but the narrator is terrible! The story may be good, I wouldn’t know as I only made a few minutes.

I can’t listen to something where the narrator doesn’t even try to pronounce the name of the country correctly.

It’s like having a horrible murder case read to you by a Kindergarten teacher, with a lighthearted music and strange jokes weaved throughout.

Alice is a fab story teller, great to have real snippets from the programme and the researches included too. Really interesting story. Thoroughly enjoyed

Obviously wondery load this podcast with adverts front back and Centre which reminds me of watching TV in the USA in the 80s where you’d have about five minutes of TV to 15 minutes of adverts if you don’t like it become a subscriber… but I really did find the podcast itself superficial and...Read full review »

I'm only on episode 2, and this story is already making me want to scream, "Coloniser, get out!" It was ironic when Phil accused the locals of being racist—there's no such thing as racism against white people. I'm rooting for this family to learn a lesson that all entitled...Read full review »

Excellent and gripping narration of an insane story! Well worth your time.
SS1989AUS via Apple Podcasts · Australia · 05/25/24
Interesting story, incredibly hammy narration which is quite distracting. Most irritating is the host insisting on pronouncing Nicaragua incorrectly over and over and over again, for a story set in Nicaragua that really should have been fixed because it starts to grate.
AlbaOrla via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 05/23/24
One of those true crime podcasts where it’s joking a lot and told like a funny story. When there is a murder included and the person the story is about didn’t want to be included maybe this story should have been left be and not retold. I listened to it so i have joined in the stirring up but...Read full review »

This was not up to the standard I’ve come to love about Wondery. The storytelling was meandering, awkward, and un-engaging. I stuck with it thinking “Surely this will get better.” I now regret the time wasted.

The mis-pronouncement of Nicaragua over and over by the narrator. Particularly when others pronounce it properly.
thisnicknameistaken2019 via Apple Podcasts · Canada · 05/21/24
The story of Janique is mildly interesting, but there’s not much to it, a fact apparently not lost on the producers of this podcast. In order to pad the content, they’ve added an entirely unrelated murder story, that is simply a distraction from the story we tuned in to hear.

Great reporting and love the host. This story is wild!

A woman buys an island and it turns out that the local people didn’t actually consent. Woman and husband turn out to be low-key racists. Do they deserve to be attacked? No. But are they the victims? No. Just read the buzz feed article. It’s quicker and better.
