Reviews
Baffled by the negative reviews. If you’re a fan of podcasts like Blank Check, The Big Picture, etc. this is a great listen. Hosts like David Sims and Shirley Li are delightful, insightful, and not overly serious. Would love for this podcast to return.

The other hosts don’t really add much. Without David I think would be not worth listening to.

This show feels made for me—they cover some of my favorite tv shows and movies. Love the informal, friends-hanging-out vibe, which is just want I want from a podcast. Can’t wait for the new season!

Seriously. Don’t do it.

This is seriously just the worst kind of pseudo intellectual drivelOne can think of. At once, haughty and stupid. Quite a feat. The insights are childish and churlish.

I’m a firm believer that David is the real comic genius of Blank Check, so I really just came for David. It has been, however, the pleasure beyond all pleasures to hear Shirley again and to get to know Sophie and Spencer. They make the perfect cohort, an absolute joy to listen to.

The first couple episodes were really good but the show has devolved into the hosts exhibiting that they’re just too pleased with themselves. Shirley takes up too much time laughing at her own jokes for sure. The other cast members have followed her into wanting to be too cute whereas the show is...Read full review »

Pretense, snark and an absence of depth. Narcissist bores not worth my time and energy, you decide if it is worth yours.

Dear millennials, It is possible to have a clever, insightful discussion without a persistent self-deprecating laugh track. It grating-ness is equivalent to that of vocal fry, and undermines the value and weight of your words. If you say something interesting or funny, your audience can decide...Read full review »

Hard to get past the giggling and up speak to actually listen to what might be interesting content.

The layout is very straight forward and it is nice to hear a couple different voices/opinions on the same piece of work. Love David Sims! I always appreciate his perspective.

Completely obsessed, it’s gotten to the point where I’m watching episodes covering content I have no interest in watching. Smart, funny, earnest, great chemistry. Jesus christ though the pain of hearing them pronounce “Jodorowsky” with a hard “J”. Come on guys aren’t you American didn’t you take...Read full review »

This is a perfectly fine podcast! It’s more of a hang out vibe of these writers chatting together in an informal way. This has not advertised itself as a Serious Critical Review show so don’t expect that. If you want deeper analysis, go read the reviews on the site or find a show that spends...Read full review »

This is not a good review show. It seems ill disciplined , and badly in need of structure and editing. Not worthwhile sadly (big Atlantic fan here)

I was floored that you did not mention one person of color or rom-coms featuring an all-black/Latinx/Asian cast. Matt Damon is the best representation of higher standards in a leading man?? Him or Brad Pitt are the only men you can envision for the future? Ugh! Your limited POV on the genre and...Read full review »

I’m very disappointed in this podcast. The reviewers merely discuss their feelings and offer personal anecdotes instead of an intelligent analysis of the work at hand.

I like all the work these writers produce in the magazine but this show isn’t tightly produced or (to consider another option) dynamic enough

The reviewers on this podcast appear repeatedly unable to separate what a feeling a movie evokes in them from how they feel about said movie. Like art, movies that make them feel a way they’d prefer not to feel are not “bad movies”. Yet when a movie evoked for them the desire to push away from...Read full review »

All I hear when listening to this podcast is Logan Roy screaming his favorite catch phrase…

they laugh a lot but nothing was funny. Maybe I just have a headache.

So tired of podcasts, especially movie podcast, that put in no work. As if three people snarking and laughing is enough, insight and analysis optional.

Not into it. Much better review podcasts out there
snuffleupagusAMA via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 12/09/21
There are lots of review podcasts and was looking for one that was a bit different. So far it’s not. And usually as a courtesy there is a spoiler warning if big plot points or endings are discussed. Not so here

This show should be titled "The Giggler." Some insight and analysis but Calling the Producer: cut out that annoying giggling. These women sound like twelve year olds Not worthy of The Atlantic.Read full review »

Having trouble getting anyhting useful from this podcast. I LOVE the Atlantic, and some other programs Ive listened to from them. This is way too fluffy. There is a feel of a college dorm room with people talking about things they may or may not know much about to please each other. Unfinished...Read full review »

How about listening to this pod cast of your self’s, then do a review of “it” Let me say, too much fake laughter. without any alterations at all, this could be a Saturday night live bit.
Maureen, AN OK BOOMER via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 11/25/21
Omg PLEASE less giggling and free-styling, it’s so annoying. I want to hear an Atlantic-style review show: deep, intelligent, well thought out. This is just not it

Interesting exchanges, but too much nervous giggling, for sure. Also, if you can’t explain the dialogue, do a little research so that you can. Calling Connor the First Pancake is perfect: A “first pancake” is the one you use to test the griddle; it is usually too light or too burned, I.e.,...Read full review »

I disagreed with much of the analysis of the second season of Ted Lasso. I’m surprised that one of the three commentators didn’t push back or voice an opposing, or at least different, opinion about what the creators were trying to do and how effectively they did it. Would have preferred three...Read full review »
