Being a downstairs neighbor to Canada, I have learned so much, not just about their history and culture but of our own. It has given me a new perspective to US history and has inspired me to learn more and seek more answers about the US. And that the Canadians really AREN’T nicer than...Read full review »

I now understand why people say “defund the CBC”. This podcast should be named “why I hate Canada and the people who made it”. What exactly is the point of even doing this podcast. So one sided. I agree with other reviews on how juvenile it is.

Extremely well researched and informative anticolonial stories with hosts that are a joy to listen to. Looking forward to more episodes on treaties and landclaims!

The topics are really interesting and could be great show - but often the hosts get sidetracked and make jokes that are so distracting. It’s a little too much. We get it, you’re trying to be edgy and irreverent, but it’s at the expense of the history you’re trying to represent.

Non-indigenous, American from Michigan here. This is such important work being presented. I alternate between informed, angry, sad, and hopeful throughout each show. Stellar, stellar work by the hosts and their guests. I value all the CBC Indigenous offerings, wish NPR provided a similar...Read full review »

This program has everything, good research, comedy, entertainment and is great to practice “listening” for non-native English speakers, totally recommended

In the very first episode the women are laughing about cannibalism and minimalising the Hudson’s Bay Company. I know what they are trying to say but it comes across as unreliable, biased, and juvenile. This can be done with decorum.

I use parts of this in my social studies class. Well-researched and beautifully delivered by these talented women. Thank-you!

A great podcast that should be a entry requirement to enter Canada ( even 4 vacation) 🎉💯✔️

I started listening to your podcast a few months ago and instantly fell in love! What a great podcast - informative, fun, but with an appropriate seriousness for the tough topics that we otherwise don’t ever learn about (or topics that we learn wrong). I appreciate the hosts SO much, and all the...Read full review »

I LOVE your pod cast! I have an hour commute to work everyday and I so look forward to your episodes! You are both so funny and have such important things to say! I just can’t get enough! You are my first podcast, and every other podcast I listen to, just is not you and can’t compare! Thank...Read full review »

Californian here. This pod entertains and informs about so many varied aspects of Canadian life and culture - stories I haven’t heard elsewhere. Kudos to the hosts!

I heard this episode via Front Burner and provided great information; even details I had never heard before (thank you Ms. Kim!). One detail made in jest I felt lacked important context. Lieutenant General Charles “Tick” Bonesteel (pronounced ‘Bonn-uh-stel’) was not at all the backwoods hick...Read full review »

This is the best Canadian podcast of 2023 and I’ve been saying this since 2019. Using historical facts to inform modern discourse, I never fail to learn something!

Only thing wrong with this podcast is that new episodes frequently enough. Our history is embarrassing but we have to expose the truth so as not to repeat. Great work!

Amazing content aside, I often get excited when a new episode drops into my feed because I just want to hear Leah and Falen’s voices. After 5 seasons, I feel like their my smart friends I don’t get to see enough of. I recommend this podcast to anyone who gives a damn about the work that needs...Read full review »

Thanks for doing such an incredibly good quality and invested job with this podcast Falen and Leah! I am learning so much and I really REALLY appreciate the way you both seem to bring your whole heart and your fun humour to these valuable topics and challenging pieces of our history.

As a newcomer in Canada I can’t stress enough all the gratitude I feel for listening amazing information. I just heard this episode, I live in BC and love the nature around me. Thank you for spotting the lights to one of the most valuables things that make Canada beautiful: the animals. Amazing!

It’s always exciting to learn new and informative things about the country you live in. But most of all, I love the hosts. They make the podcast come to life!

Falen and Leah are an absolute delight! They are incredible storytellers that demonstrate and allow learning, naming, and calling out alongside basic human-ing (aka self care) in a wonderfully accessible way.

Just discovered the podcast and can’t stop listening! Ever thought of doing an episode on the ‘mysterious’ indigenous village of Hochelaga, from Cartier’s first venture into what is now Montreal.

Leah and Falen do an amazing job of making Canadian history (including the uglier parts) fascinating. I never considered myself a history buff, but The Secret Life of Canada has taught me so much AND inspired me to find out more on multiple occasions. I had a lot of hope for this podcast. I love history. I have really enjoyed other CBC podcasts like Escaping NXIVM, Satanic Panic, On Drugs, etc. I find that the content falls short however. There is banter between the hosts that frankly I can’t relate to and seems to be used to fill time that in...Read full review »

Great idea to interview historians, but perhaps try spending more than two minutes of an episode with them // Nothing about the incomparably brutal XY Company and North West companies spreading false rumours about infected blankets, nor about the Hudson’s Bay Company’s role in vaccination (let...Read full review »

I think I started listening to this podcast sometime in its first season. It’s such a great podcast and even though I list track of it for a while it’s still a good thing to listen to to learn things that aren’t known or are hidden.
