“I went into this open minded after the move from the 5by5 network.
Good points
John seems more energised than the last couple of 5by5 shows
No eating or drinking in my ear
John not saying 'I don't know' constantly
Bad points
Topics were nearly all rehashes of previous Talk Show discussions
Poor production values - the guest audio is terrible
Sponsor ad readings are just painful to listen to - jerky and stilted
Show was all over the shop (more so than the old talk show).
Appeared to have little preparation with lots of John searching for what he wanted to talk about next
Sorry but this isn't the Talk Show. The Talk Show was Dan and John. The reason it worked is Dan did all the work and John just showed up and provided commentary. John should have renamed it something else as it has very little of what made the old Talk Show good. My main concern (as listed in the cover art) is 'your host Mr John Gruber'. Sorry, but as good of a technology commenter as John is, I don't think he has hosting in him. He needs someone to keep him on track and his guests shouldn't be expected to do that. I'll check in again in five or so episodes to see if it has gotten any better (and update this review if it has) but for now this podcast isn't worth the time. “The old Talk Show had one straight man (Dan Benjamin) and one color man (John Gruber). Now with John at the helm and bland co-hosts there is essentially two straight men as the duo. It is bland, and uninteresting.
