“John and Greta are clearly very nice people but I’ve found it best to skip their lengthy show openings. Maybe I’m just fed up with the solipsism that is rampant amongst podcast hosts. And maybe that solipsism is precisely why they do the podcasts. If so, I’m grateful for that, but after a while it does become more than a little exhausting to experience.
That said, when the show gets going it is often quite good. John knows his stuff and Greta’s honesty and comments are refreshing. Yet they are prone to over-interpretation, especially inserting Christianity subtexts where none exists. Rather than ascribing unfounded intentions to Tolkien, they might benefit from a deeper study of the mythologies and rural cultures he drew from.
The podcast could do with a little editing. It's a bit of a challenge to cope with some of the discursive rambling, long pauses, and dialogue dead-ends that can derail the intent of some episodes. Tighten it up, take out the irrelevant stuff, and it could be a five-star show.”Read full review »
