“I've been listening to "The Truth About Money" for over 15 years, since it was a local-only radio show in the Washington DC area.
Unlike other financial shows, this one doesn't try to tell you which stocks to buy or which market sectors to get into. It doesn't recommend the same solution for all people, knowing fully that everybody's goals are different and everbody's situation is different so everybody's solution is necessarily also going to be different.
Instead, the show tries to teach basic financial literacy. Why it's important to save for retirement. Why it's important to always have investments. Why diversification is important. Why annuities are usually (but not always) a bad idea. Why insurance is important. Why you shouldn't depend on you pension or social security for your retirement income, etc. Not every reason applies to every person, but that's OK - the goal isn't to tell you what to do but to educate you so you can (either alone or with a financial advisor) properly work out an approach for achieving your financial goals.
Yes, some of the content promotes Edelman Financial Engines. I would expect that, since they are producing the show. And yes, there's some touchy-feely content that is not really about finance. But that's not the majority of the show so it really doesn't bother me.
Although I've never done business with Ric's firm, I have discussed many of his ideas with my own financial advisor and we have used many of the same concepts as a part of my financial plan. I believe I am better off financially than I would have been if I had never listened to the show.”Read full review »
