As a someone who grew up with this era of punk this show is great. Even when I don’t know the band/person, there is always something worth hearing and taking me back to those days! The host is really good and always has good questions, you can tell he does research and prepares. 5 stars!

Long time listener! The show goes really in depth and talks to some gems of players who never really gets to talk on other podcasts.

I really love this podcast. Hearing from, and about, a lot of the bands that I listened to and saw during my teenage years has been great. Keep up what you’re doing as long as you can.

Just a great nostalgia trip through the scene I loved so much as a teenager. Reminds me of all the great people I became friends with during that time.

Lanemyer was a decent band and fairly nice guys in the 90s. They are actually what brought me to this podcast in the first place. I’m shocked at how little the host seems to know about punk rock in the 90s. There are some really good interviews but it doesn’t seem like he was that into the scene....Read full review »

Great interviews and great guests. Huge fan of this era of punk and the host does a really good job of letting the guest talk without interjecting themselves into the story (like some other lesser hosts do).

This show is an outstanding look at the late 90s and early 00s scene, a time when music was blowing up and new genres were emerging constantly. Mike does a great job looking at how it all connects with bands and the industry, but also takes the time to talk to lesser known bands that were...Read full review »

I kinda expected more from Mike as far as the common knowledge of stuff is concerned. Not knowing who Malcom Mcclarren was?! Or that the first Lollapalooza was 91 with Jane’s addiction, Ice-T, Rollins, etc?! I mean, don’t get me wrong, his interview style is very relaxed, very personable, amd...Read full review »

Super well done podcast. Great discussions mixed with funny stories about the 90s punk/rock/emo scene (and all of that genre)! If you’re looking for a show that covers it all, it’s the one to go!

Mike does a fantastic job interviewing a variety of people in the punk scene. Even not knowing all of the bands, it’s quite entertaining. It oozes genuine enthusiasm for music. Well done!

This podcast fits into a niche market, as it primarily covers the NJ punk scene. But so many of the interviews are great to listen to. If you are/were a fan of the mid to late 90's punk scene, regardless of whether you grew up in NJ or elsewhere, give this a listen. There have been many...Read full review »

For anyone from the northeast/a fan of the 90s-00s punk or pop punk scene. Really some great interviews with some different folks who kicked around the scene. After you listen to several episodes, you can start to piece the different pieces of the web together—all interconnected by and through...Read full review »

Beautiful podcast! So many great conversations about how it used to be in the music scene. Love the style of the host and the variety of the guests. Keep up the good work!!

Doyle has a conversational approach that reminds us how communal the scene was/is. His final question for every episode, “What scene ethics do you hold on to this day?”, shows how the scene shaped anyone who was involved. Listen, share, & keep the scene alive.

Sometime in 93, I started going to shows here and there at Skater’s World and the Wayne Firehouse. Within a year, I was going to a show nearly every week. By the time I was 14, I was booking shows, helping at others, and attending 2-3 a week. Whether I was in a muddy pit at Montclair State for...Read full review »

Really great podcast! I’m actually from central NJ, this was my scene, so it’s relevant to me. But even if you were a kid from Arkansas at the time, I’d be surprised if this didn’t strike a chord with Anyone who was into the underground bands. There was nothing better than going to punk shows,...Read full review »

This guy I know was almost complaining to me about how he’s been re-enacting WWII as a Russian twice as long as the war lasted. Lanemeyer was a band for five years. Here’s to the future of This Was The Scene. -SomeKid

This is an amazing podcast. I left NJ (Wanaque/Wayne) when I was young and moved to the Lehigh Valley. While I didn't grow up in the Jersey scene, the bands Doyle interviews are some of my favorite bands to cross the river into PA. Overall, it's a great podcast to hear behind the scenes...Read full review »

Doyle does a phenomenal job interviewing icons of the punk rock scene, utilizing preset questions and off-the-cuff queries as the need arises. As a listener, it’s wondrous to hear musicians of my youth displaying such candor as they chat with Mike for an hour or so. I highly recommend this...Read full review »

A very recent interview with Jeff Caudill, somebody who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing since 1991. As far as his extremely prolific musical output goes, I’m most partial to 1990-1995 era Gameface (as I previously alluded to, the ‘90s were BY FAR my favorite time in my almost 50 year life) but...Read full review »

As someone whose always been interested in 90’s NJPP but wasn’t actually there this is a great look in to the scene. With very little info out there for a lot of bands of that era this is a great way to fill in blanks and discover more great bands. Great idea for a podcast!

This Was The Scene is the only podcast you need. I’ve listened to nearly every episode in a week because it’s that fuggin’ good. This is a great podcast for anyone that spend time in a local punk scene in the 90s. Doyle has done a fantastic job interviewing everyone from fans, musicians and promoters to give you the whole picture. This wasn’t my scene, but it all sounds very familiar.

Sean, this is a very cool thing you're doing. NJPP times were some of the raddest times of our lives. The salad days for sure! I'd like to donate some MB recordings (known and rare) and scene ephemera to support your show. Just let me know where to send stuff. All th' best. Keep on truckin'
