“I've listened to several episodes of this podcast, and as a full time artist was hoping that I would find it inspiring and uplifting.
Whilst some good points are made about how to grow your business on each episode, there is a very negative attitude towards designers who still make each of their pieces by hand - labelling these people as 'hopeful hobbyists' and implying that working in this way will never lead to growth or a successful business.
I find it hard to get on board with this attitude for 2 reasons.
1, it is possible to make a very good salary and still make your pieces by hand, if you are a highly skilled designer/maker who is crafting high-end pieces which are unique and desirable. I personally know artists who are doing this completely solo, or with just a handful of people working beside them.
2, There seems to be no concern for the ethics behind growing your business at the expense of others. In one episode they were talking about an artist who was killing her hands making everything, and that she should get her work made en-masse in the far east. But at what cost - we all know that factory workers in India, China, Thailand etc get paid a pittance for working extremely long days, so someone in the West can make huge profits. Multi million corps are built on this injustice.
Overall I have struggled to connect and engage with this podcast. It just feels too corporate and not down to earth enough for me...”Read full review »
