A fair review I hope!
I've just finished listening to episode 42 in the car, and since you always ask for reviews, I thought, "Well, it's Easter weekend, I might as well write one." Good Points: The dynamic between the four guys is amazing, but it would be nice to hear another woman's voice every so often. I enjoy it because it makes my car journey pass more quickly, and sometimes I burst out laughing while stuck in traffic, causing people to look at me as if I'm mad. It's refreshing that you're not afraid to say it how it is, and you don’t seem to get caught up in a lot of the nonsense (this is why I stopped listening to my previous go-to industry podcast). Carl seems as honest as the day is long and doesn't fabricate stories or talk nonsense. You are actually balanced when it comes to SJP, and thanks to Andy for his support. Bad Points: I wanted to be honest here, but sometimes I think your lack of knowledge can be a bit dangerous. For example, in your last episode: Alan didn’t seem to understand when a JISA turned into an ISA and how it worked in practice. Nick thought that CGT on portfolios was 18% or 24%, which it isn’t unless you sold a buy-to-let. Andy mentioned he put everyones into income units to fund withdrawals, when actually cashing in units can sometimes help people utilise the £6k or £3k next year allowance as the bulk of the encashment is clearly capital. Also, non-payment of CGT is merely a deferral, and if you defer long enough to become a higher rate taxpayer, then you will pay more. I thought the whole point of having a financial planner was to address someone's needs at their level rather than a catch-all policy like everyone takes income from income units. Most clients or even some IFA’s might not realise this, as they would take your word as gospel, but I think you should be able to grasp the basics. One final thing, sometimes I have small children in the car, and listening to four guys saying the F-word is not great. Summary: If you're looking to listen to some real financial planners and some industry gossip in a light-hearted way, then I would give it 5 stars. If you're after technical content, then these guys are not for you. Since I listen to it for a bit of fun, I'm going to give this a 3. If the guys address my points, I will come back in 3 months and increase my rating – fair enough, I think!Read full review »

As a solo practitioner in Ireland, I get a lot of value from fun, informative, and topical discussions between a good bunch of guys with whom I share the philosophy of delivering real financial planning to clients. Will definitely be at the live event in 2024. John McWey @ardbrackfin
