Smart and insightful - just needs an editor
I really love the concept of this show, which fills a gap in my feed left by the ill-fated "Friendly Fire." The hosts are really smart and insightful and I genuinely learn something every time I listen. I have nothing but respect for their reviewing and writing ability. Trouble is, I can almost never get through an episode because the hosts' delivery is so unfocused. One of the guys will start a sentence, interrupt himself for the entire duration of it with interjections and stammers, and only occasionally finish the point he started. This is an actual sentence from the latest episode: "This to me is like <pause> it's not even, it's like, just, totally vapid, you know what I mean? Like I think that that's, that's the difference, like they're, there's like, and when I, when I like, when I see this, like I react really strongly against it. Like I don't -- and that's like what bugs -- it's like stupidity bugs me, like: I, it's, it's not ab-- and I think like every- the reaction of people who hold this is like "oh you're so, you're overly woke" and I'm like no, you're just an idiot, like, I can tolerate ... I can tolerate a certain degree, I mean like, I think everyone can tolerate masculinity ..." Genuinely not trying to be a jerk. I've hosted podcasts before, and I know how hard it can be. I'm also not coming down on this person for the way he speaks -- it's just that it needs, desperately, to be condensed in the editing process. That whole ... mess up there could have been a ten-second sentence, given a clean edit. Anyway I'm apparently in the minority here, beccause these reviews are all glowing -- and in terms of the insights themselves it's well-earned praise! If you care more about the substance of the material than the manner in which it's delivered, you'll probably love this show. I just can't get past how much better it would be if it were cut more aggressively in the edit.Read full review »

This is an interesting idea for a podcast slash way for Jamelle to indulge in his taste for trashy movies. They explore the politics and culture of a genre of film that I grew up with, one that is often ridiculous in its portrayal of heroic masculinity. Always amazes me to see how little has...Read full review »

Perfect for film and history buffs, especially those born in the 80s which I happen to be. Captures the rare spirit of 90s culture and how it both shines through these movies and also still resonates today. Also a great way to discover and re-discover some real good movies that are kind of...Read full review »

I really enjoyed the podcast’s engaging conversations. Smart, fun and informative. I also appreciated the lack of mean spirited reviews. They don’t look down on the material and obviously enjoy and appreciate the film makers effort.
