“My mother lived very near Varnumtown during this period. It is an interesting story whose telling would have benefitted from reporters who paid more attention to the details. These guys clearly sailed in from god-knows-where, and after driving from Wilmington to Varnumtown and interviewing a few locals, they pretty much phoned the rest of it in.
Wilmington is not “near the ocean.” It’s AT the ocean.
Mooresville is not in “western North Carolina.” It’s in the Piedmont, which is in central North Carolina.
Varnumtown is not exactly a time warped hicksville that is surrounded by swampy wilderness.
This sort of sloppy story telling is made even worse by the nearly giddy appreciation that the hosts exude over the way this supposedly uber isolated hole-in-the-walk grabbed for the brass ring when the cocaine cowboys came calling. On top of that, they spend nearly half of every episode yammering on about sidebar topics that are so tedious that it makes my teeth hurt. No one cues up a podcast on drug cartels so that they can hear stories about talented Mexican math students or reviews of Hollywood drug movies.
Try harder.”
