Great podcast and investigating for the area I grew up in. - But we know there’s quite a bit more to the story than just Lockwood.

It feels like half of each episode is an advertisement. It’s hard to get into the storyline when hello fresh keeps getting pushed into my head, or a 15 min preview for another show. I’ve never heard such a scattered story, that had potential to be decent but just gets ruined because they bombard...Read full review »

There are far too many ads that start and stop the story. It is very frustrating. I thought as a Pushkin subscriber that I would be spared the Ads.

As an Eastern North Carolinian who grew up here in the 80’s and 90’s, I loved everything about this podcast series. The music, storytelling and interviews with residents captured the tone and kind of good-natured lawlessness of the time period. Even now, Coastal NC can be a pretty strange place,...Read full review »

I find the story interesting, but there are SO MANY ADS. It's almost comical. I probably won't continue; it's too frustrating.Read full review »

The hosts are treasures 🖤 And the story is fascinating!!

Could’ve been great, but was repulsed by how hosts thought they were so much better than small town folks.

While it was not unpleasant spending time with the characters of Varnamtown and its eager narrators, there are a LOT of ads to wade through and the pace can be a bit slow at times, with borderline interesting subplots padding out the episodes. Serial it isn’t. Has my mind been enriched by...Read full review »

I stuck through because I love most of Kyle’s work but like many others have said, very little storytelling and mostly off topics commentary. Ads can be disruptive and take up a large chunk of the podcast. Entire story could likely be told in an hour but is spread out over 8 episodes of very...Read full review »

Dale himself told me about this podcast. I met him after I stopped by the most bizarre property I’d ever seen in my life and he came out to great me. I love his story. I’m getting his book next..The podcast is very well done.

Terrible presentation of what is an interesting story. The presenters are more interested in spinning a version of the story they want rather than the actual truth. The investigation was poorly done for the podcast making it look as if this was a bunch of backwoods bumpkins just slinging drugs...Read full review »

This could have been a great podcast. Unfortunately guests tell their stories two sentences at a time followed by long, inane commentary and annoying ads. It’s a fascinating story but this podcast is a waste of the guests’ and listeners’ time.

Super intriguing premise as someone who lives not far, but the hosts are so condescending that the story is completely lost.
AshleyPedz via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 03/28/24
I’ll echo what others have said about ads. There’s waaaaay too many. The most annoying part is it sounds like brake rotors screeching in the background of their audio. It’s faint, but once you hear it - it’s beyond distracting. It’s like having a train yard in your ears. I lasted 4 episodes...Read full review »

The story itself is interesting, but I would not recommend this podcast. The podcast did practically nothing to explore the negative effects of drug trafficking. The story focused on the positive effects drug trafficking had on the small rural town by bringing in money and making people rich. It...Read full review »

Both hosts have done a fantastic job digging into this story to uncover something truly interesting that has happened in Varnam Town. However, while the podcast is worth a listen and very interesting, the actual content feels stretched out to create more episodes, which became detrimental as you...Read full review »

Whoever these guys agent is deserves a raise. I have never listened to a podcast where there are so many ads it's unbearable. I'm talking 10+ minutes per episode. This could have been an awesome story if the hosts weren’t so full of themselves and there weren’t as many ads. Intriguing story and well told… BUT OMG, there is maybe 10-15 of story and 20 minutes of junk ads and nonsensical commentary about other junk. Had to give up after episode 3

The story is amazing. It’s really crazy to think that this was going on in the early 1980s, especially if you were familiar with the area at that time. However, the organization of the podcast somewhat haphazard, and the presenters come off as quite condescending. Some of their questions for Dale...Read full review »

Host deliveries are distracting, condescending to some subjects and draw out the story needlessly. They are trying too hard to be clever and entertaining. Lots of ads and an “after show”. I would like this story to be covered by another podcast and condensed to a couple of episodes.
lolajett via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 03/20/24
The way this is formatted is horrible. Way too many commercials . The hosts come off pretentious and annoying. Half the episode is the hosts just talking about random things or their past projects. Unfortunately this could have been a really interesting podcast.

Fascinating tales of early 80’s drug running. However, you can tell this is done by film people- really high production quality, great music, effects, story telling… and about 10-15 minutes of actual story related content per episode. If that’s your style, this is for you! But, it might be...Read full review »

Crazy story, want to hear it but feel like soo much is missing. They NEVER discuss how it all started…no mention of how the town and cartel business started. I think this is an amazing, and surprising, story, but imo the story telling isn’t great. Agree with other reviews that the hosts have too many “cutesy” interjections that disrupt flow of story. The story is so interesting but it is told very badly. Why is the last 15 mins of each episode labeled as “behind the scenes” but it’s just random chit chat between the hosts? They also make fun of people they interview. Very disappointing.

The Varnamtown podcast had me drawn in during the first couple of episodes. Seems like A LOT of missing information in my opinion. It’s clear the story wasn’t fully investigated. Between that and commercials that completely took over, I wasn’t impressed. And shame on them for downing an entire town!
