This podcast was such a fun listen! I’ve shared it with several folks and they all loved it. Such a weird and unbelievable story. Being a Kyle fan is why I tried it but I’m sure glad I did. Hoping for more collaborations with Josh & Kyle!

This format is different from other ‘investigative journalism’ series I’ve listed to, in that the 2 host are furnishing both the story (quite interesting!) and the peanut gallery - their personal observations which are pretty funny sometimes. There were some things missing throughout, like the...Read full review »

A guy on here literally titled his review “they look like Jews” and it’s just right there on the front page. Seriously? No report function?

I generally like this type of story but this one not tight or well told.

My family has had property on Holden Beach for generations. We were just down at the High Rider buying shrimp recently from Mark and Lori. Wonderful people! As a child I recall a bale of drugs washing up on Holden Beach and my parents wondering how in the world it arrived there. Now we know!...Read full review »

I live in Brunswick county now. I have driven by Dale’s compound and had no idea of the history/ story. The commercials in this podcast were so annoying but the story is fascinating. I’m now really excited and looking forward to reading the book.

Meh
The story was interesting but overly drawn out in a way that was not interesting and awkwardly interspersed with ads.

25 minutes of simply safe commercial and 5 annoying minutes of babbletalk

I could do without the guys and their rhetoric after the episodes. I’m really not that ender said in anything except for the story and to me I gotta wade through that to get to the story.

I’m a former resident of Brunswick County North Carolina and though I have never met Crazy Dale myself, but I have known people who know him and have told me part of the whole story. I want to hear the whole thing! Please🙏🏼

The hosts are wonderful - But THE MUSIC !!! I can only imagine the hosts’ expressions when they first heard it ! But I assume they had to let it go . Worse still are the ads Better when Josh & Kyle rather brilliantly do their own voice over but …. the amount of advertising is relentless ....Read full review »

I’ve really enjoyed this podcast. The hosts treat this story as a conversation and point out the ridiculous (and rather funny) moments from this story. We hear a lot from the people involved.

Far out the frequency and length of the adverts make this an incredibly rough listen. It’s an otherwise really great podcast but I’m four episodes in and I’m giving up, some of the podcast segments feel almost the same length as the ads!

Great podcast and investigating for the area I grew up in. - But we know there’s quite a bit more to the story than just Lockwood.
Candler5 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 05/06/24
It feels like half of each episode is an advertisement. It’s hard to get into the storyline when hello fresh keeps getting pushed into my head, or a 15 min preview for another show. I’ve never heard such a scattered story, that had potential to be decent but just gets ruined because they bombard...Read full review »

There are far too many ads that start and stop the story. It is very frustrating. I thought as a Pushkin subscriber that I would be spared the Ads.

As an Eastern North Carolinian who grew up here in the 80’s and 90’s, I loved everything about this podcast series. The music, storytelling and interviews with residents captured the tone and kind of good-natured lawlessness of the time period. Even now, Coastal NC can be a pretty strange place,...Read full review »

While it was not unpleasant spending time with the characters of Varnamtown and its eager narrators, there are a LOT of ads to wade through and the pace can be a bit slow at times, with borderline interesting subplots padding out the episodes. Serial it isn’t. Has my mind been enriched by...Read full review »

I stuck through because I love most of Kyle’s work but like many others have said, very little storytelling and mostly off topics commentary. Ads can be disruptive and take up a large chunk of the podcast. Entire story could likely be told in an hour but is spread out over 8 episodes of very...Read full review »

Dale himself told me about this podcast. I met him after I stopped by the most bizarre property I’d ever seen in my life and he came out to great me. I love his story. I’m getting his book next..The podcast is very well done.

Terrible presentation of what is an interesting story. The presenters are more interested in spinning a version of the story they want rather than the actual truth. The investigation was poorly done for the podcast making it look as if this was a bunch of backwoods bumpkins just slinging drugs...Read full review »

This could have been a great podcast. Unfortunately guests tell their stories two sentences at a time followed by long, inane commentary and annoying ads. It’s a fascinating story but this podcast is a waste of the guests’ and listeners’ time.

Super intriguing premise as someone who lives not far, but the hosts are so condescending that the story is completely lost.

I’ll echo what others have said about ads. There’s waaaaay too many. The most annoying part is it sounds like brake rotors screeching in the background of their audio. It’s faint, but once you hear it - it’s beyond distracting. It’s like having a train yard in your ears. I lasted 4 episodes...Read full review »

Whoever these guys agent is deserves a raise. I have never listened to a podcast where there are so many ads it's unbearable. I'm talking 10+ minutes per episode. This could have been an awesome story if the hosts weren’t so full of themselves and there weren’t as many ads. The story is amazing. It’s really crazy to think that this was going on in the early 1980s, especially if you were familiar with the area at that time. Host deliveries are distracting, condescending to some subjects and draw out the story needlessly. They are trying too hard to be clever and entertaining. Lots of ads and an “after show”. I would like this story to be covered by another podcast and condensed to a couple of episodes.
lolajett via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 03/20/24
The way this is formatted is horrible. Way too many commercials . The hosts come off pretentious and annoying. Half the episode is the hosts just talking about random things or their past projects. Unfortunately this could have been a really interesting podcast.

Fascinating tales of early 80’s drug running. However, you can tell this is done by film people- really high production quality, great music, effects, story telling… and about 10-15 minutes of actual story related content per episode.
