Gird your loins for all the ads
While it was not unpleasant spending time with the characters of Varnamtown and its eager narrators, there are a LOT of ads to wade through and the pace can be a bit slow at times, with borderline interesting subplots padding out the episodes. Serial it isn’t. Has my mind been enriched by getting to know Dale Varnam and those who knew him during his cocaine heyday? Probably not. Do we care if Varnam ever met Pablo Escobar? No. However, Mike Grimes, the retired DEA officer, was probably the highlight for me. His matter-of-fact drawl and recollections almost warranted its own podcast. I’m glad Kyle and his friend have ventured into the world of the podcast. It’s a competitive landscape. Hopefully in their next season they’ll find their groove.
