“I agree that the prison and parole system need serious reform and truly expected to sympathize with the plight of Jake, but this went beyond the pale for me. Jake randomly stabbed Eric Kane in the middle of the night and left him to bleed to death without any attempt to get Eric help after he went on the run. And, even during any of his lengthy opportunities to give his side of the story in this podcast, Jake has never given any kind of explanation for this act. Oh, yes, he’s been diagnosed with epilepsy… but the data showing any correlation between the condition and murder is virtually nonexistent. So I felt like I was taking crazy pills when the podcast host seemed to be making it sound like the Eric Kane’s parents were acting outside the bounds of reasonable behavior when they remained active in his parole hearings and then did whatever they could to get him returned to prison when he was finally out on parole. Or when we were supposed to think the father of the children of Jake’s second prison psychologist wife did everything he could to keep his kids away from this convicted murderer. Considering the countless trouble Marta got herself in by marrying a convict and especially when she chose to take her kids up to the prison to visit her incarcerated murderer boyfriend, she wasn’t making sound decisions and I can’t imagine the fear her ex-husband/father of her children felt knowing she’d happily grant Jake unfettered access to their kids. The truth is that Jake had a privileged upbringing, murdered someone for no reason, managed to manipulate two different prison psychologists to marry him- even to the detriment of their professional and personal lives, and has had decades to fine-tune his sympathy story and yet continues to avoid giving much-needed answers to grant his victims closure. I’m kind of tired of all the Sarah Koenig/“Serial” wannabes, who copy everything from the music, voice tone and cadence, and apparent flippancy with interpreting facts, but at least most of them avoid being so manipulated by murderers that they blame a murder victim’s parents and making a father trying to protect his children out to be a monster, not to mention giving the murderer open opportunities to give his perspective on everything.”
