Dietary food guidelines are a distinctly modern phenomenon. Why do they even exist? Probably because all of the sudden, consumers have so many choices, that they can no longer instinctually feed themselves… and remain healthy.
While the US has been making dietary recommendations to its citizens for over a century, and have updated them every 5 years or so since the 1980’s, have you ever wondered what other governments recommend to their people?
This week I make some observations about what...

In the past 30 or 40 years, we’ve been getting really good at creating indoor activities. In part this could because of the advances in modern technology, maybe the comfort and safety of home, or maybe simply the convenience of the matter. Whatever the reason may be, our children are increasingly disconnected from nature, in fact, they may have a fear of nature. As our kids have moved inside, the rates of childhood obesity have tripled and the number of kids that are prescribed medication for...

Cold and flu season is here. When it’s kind of cruddy outside and we tend to be sequestered indoors and more prone to attack by the cold and flu bugs. Now is really the time to ramp up your extreme self-care to boost your immune system. There are plenty of ways to do this, you can get good rest at night, you can move around a lot during the day, going outside is very important, as is eating and drinking immune boosting foods. Here on The Roots of Health, I like to explore the disconnect between our health and our modern environment, and it’s no secret that the health of your environment is directly related to the health of yourself. I like to approach the health of our environment from an ancestral perspective. Whereas we used to hunt and gather for our food, today we have a food system that brings us food from all around the world. The disconnect there is that we no longer eat local foods in season year-round,...

Bugs. You might even call them creepy crawlies. On one hand we freak out when we see a cock roach scurry across the floor. On the other hand, we might be fascinated with them, particularly when we’re protected from them, when they are behind glass. We’ve invented bug spray and pesticides to keep them wholly separate from what we consider to be OUR environment. This is entirely a first world experience. The bulk of humanity has a different relationship with insects, and has even welcomed them...

Human beings are hard wired for survival. Our ancestors probably went through some feast or famine process. Food was not readily available for them, they had to hunt for it, they had to collect it, and if they didn’t, they were hungry. If the hunt brought home some giant animal, they might all feast on that, and that might be it for a while. And you can bet, when they were feasting, they were grateful for that meal.
But today, food is plentiful, we’ve never had the kind of choice that we...

I have a very logical mind and I like to think about our health as the cumulative result of how we’ve interacted with our environment for our entire lives. In order to change our health, we need to change our environment going forward. But it turns out that we are more than just physical beings. Our thoughts and beliefs have a lot to do with our physical health. They are instilled upon us at a very early age. Our beliefs are the thoughts that we keep on thinking, and over time, those beliefs...

It’s that time of year again when we begin to think about the people that we love and how grateful we are for them in our lives… and oftentimes we want to express that gratitude with a gift. Nearly 1 out of 4 deaths in the US today can be attributed to heart disease, it’s the number 1 cause of death. And our conventional way to treat heart disease is to prescribe statin medications, to tell people to move more, to eat less fat., to eat a healthy diet including heart healthy whole grains. My guest today is a cardiologist who just doesn’t agree with this conventional protocol. Dr. William Davis (http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/) practices cardiology in Milwaukee and he’s also the...

Seems like at least once a year, we’re seeing headlines about how red meat is killing us. The latest news is from the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/features/qa/cancer-red-meat/en/) – who has just announced that processed meats are carcinogenic, and that red meat is probably carcinogenic. This conclusion was determined by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, and is based on data from about 800 research papers.
So what does this mean for you? Do you have...

How would you feel if you had headaches and you were stressed out and you couldn’t figure out what was wrong but you wanted to feel right again. And you went to your doctor and they did a medical intake, and talked to you about what was going on in your life, and then they left you with a prescription, a prescription to go outside and spend time in nature.
This might actually happen today. There is growing evidence that time spent in nature is healing to a body.
I was recently introduced...

One of my primary messages is that our environment shapes us. Our environment literally shapes our bodies, our health, our mental state. If you want to change your body, your health, your mental state, you need to change your environment.
Over the past year on The Roots of Health, I’ve interviewed a number of guests who have helped me to relay this message. [Check out the previous episodes if you’re curious about any of these shows] I’ve chatted with Katy Bowman about casts in our modern...
