A great place to start
This is an excelent place to start for those who have an interest in European history, and what became Western civilization. Carl does a fantastic job taking you from Marathon through Alexander the Great, Carthage and Constantinople, Waterloo and so many other recognizable names, but with greater depth and insight than I remember being taught. I have learned about many groups of people I’d never heard of, that have a profound effect on the path of history. I appreciate the fact that Carl tries to keep an objective tone and tell as much from both sides of the conflict when possible. His progression through the early stages made his storytelling more comfortable (early mispronunciations), he took the feedback well and quickly became a great narrator. His podcast made me search out others to learn more about some of the places he can only do little more than mention. This is a great thread to weave all the other stories together, helping keep the overall picture clearer as I listen to stories about the Romans, Byzantines, Rus, Slovak, and Germanic peoples. I’m sure that list will continue to grow. I look forward to hearing what else he has to share. All of that being said; atrocities are atrocities, and he makes clear that they unfortunately happened often. That some rulers that came to power were horrible people, plain and simple.

This series is thoroughly researched and methodically prepared. It provides a brilliant series of snapshots threaded together by the stories of key battles. However, it is much more than the stories of the battles. The background and lead up events are chronicled so the context is understood. I...Read full review »
