Amazing & detailed. I’ve seen so many podcasts that skip over the details to try to keep their episodes short, and I love how Carl goes into all the juicy details. I love how he goes into all of the context for the historical moments he focuses on. On top of all this, he is also a good...Read full review »

There is not a more complete history of Europe performed by any human being on this planet than this. Every battle's background is made perfectly clear as Carl includes the previous decades and even centuries of context or build up leading to the conflict. If he did one on North America and...Read full review »

I cannot thank you enough for the wonderful and comprehensive series. I've never been so sad that there weren't more wars in Europe so you could keep going. Please return soon. I'll listen.Read full review »

I have listened to all of this a couple of times— please don’t end after WW1… surely you can back up and find some other key battles to tell us about!

I don’t usually write reviews. I’ve listened from about half way and enjoyed catching up. Looked forward to each new podcast. When in Europe I visited some of the sites you mentioned. From memory you became a mayor and had major health issues yet continued to produce a top notch pod. Well...Read full review »

Good history narration and good music.

The subject matter is interesting but the production value is quite low. The reading is so monotonous that there should be a warning that those listening while driving might fall asleep. And listening to this podcast with AirPods only amplifies every dry swallow and all the cotton mouth.

Excellent podcast. Listening to Carl is slightly woozy drunk and dreamy, floating with the music. such detail is appreciated. I particularly enjoyed episodes concerning events from the 19th century. The 1840’s were truly wild

This is an excelent place to start for those who have an interest in European history, and what became Western civilization. Carl does a fantastic job taking you from Marathon through Alexander the Great, Carthage and Constantinople, Waterloo and so many other recognizable names, but with greater...Read full review »

This is a very well made and interesting podcast. Does not talk just about the battle but give also other social commentaries on the background of the opponents and what cause the battles and wars they take place in to come to be fought.

This is brilliant storytelling, framework and narration. Thoroughly enjoying every episode. The best history podcast I have ever heard.

The information is very concise. However, the narration is so difficult to follow. It is too monotonous, and flat. It feels like someone is actually reading his dissertation from the paper. Totally robotic, without any sonic dynamics. These historical events deserve the vocal drama. They were...Read full review »

This has the makings of a superb podcast as it is so brilliantly detailed - I’m half Dutch and half English and really appreciate the analysis of the Anglo-Dutch wars, for example. However, your delivery is just too fast and it makes for a really uncomfortable listen. Please do slow down a tad,...Read full review »

Brilliant podcast that goes not only into the battles that shaped Europe, but the political and economic factors and great individuals that shaped the continent. Audio quality could be better at times, but I’m only up to the 4th Crusade and wouldn’t be surprised if the quality improved over time....Read full review »

This podcast is a great way to get a general survey of European history. By setting the scene and exploring the background of each key battle we get a big picture narrative of how Europe was formed and reformed.

Really enjoy the background and scene setting. Provides the why and how, not just what. Plus, a little period music.

Well researched show on European conflicts describing how each battle was won or lost by particular decisions, tactics, technology or fortune. Each battle is placed in the context of the overall history of Europe. Very interesting and informative. Bravo!

5 stars for great research , and super interesting topics , but the monotone narration with the mic too loud and close to the mouth needs help.
Hanholio via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 10/24/21
I usually like a deeper dive into topics, but this is excellent at tying in the inter-connectiveness or European History. Sadly, I have almost caught up with all the eposodes. I thyink that comes from consuming them so ravenously.

I really like this podcast. It explains European history by focusing on the broad context and lead up to, as well as the aftermath of, important battles. Really high quality, digestible information. There are not many times where it goes into opinions, but when it does I love it, example “it is not fashionable to ascribe changes in History to just one person, but....”.
