“It is so offensive to hear Baby Boomers, aka MY PARENTS, as “Boomers” on this alleged Investigative podcast. How you deliver this podcast linguistically, especially with such sensative subject matter, determines how seriously those listening will take it. I didn’t like hearing about how my parent’s generation was allegedly “more secretive” just because they’re “Boomers.” That’s not a concept based in fact or any verified study. This is a partly humanistic, partly scientific, partly questioning the ethics of the fertility industry — thus, it must abide by these three tiers and avoid usage of any unverified personal biases and unfounded theories (aka misinformation). It’s also not taking into consideration the SERIOUS ethical and privacy violations happening with DNA survellience and what’s being done with DNA being recklessly given to these opaque corporations that are extremely SECRETIVE with the experiments and 3rd party sharing of data. Why is this not focused on at all? Yet, there’s a promised deep dive into alleged “reforms” or regulations the host feels need to be done in the fertility industry. How is this any different than the regulatory and ethical concerns with blood & plasma donations, organ donations, bone marrow donations — only the first two of which are paid for inside the US?
Meanwhile outside of the US there are laws banning payment for blood & plasma donations and thus people with rare blood types in other countries live severely restricted lives in fear because they have to depend on willing volunteers of the only 3 people inside a 1,000 mile radius of them to pay out of pocket to be transported to donate blood completely unpaid in order to save a stranger’s life OR they have to beg their government to pay thru the nose to import blood from the US. See Bed of Lies Podcast, Season 2.
Point being — it’s reasonable to pay a small sum of money to people that are giving something so critical to human life. Fertility is a human right, regardless of what our privatized healthcare system says. Most women facing fertility issues will never have children because insurance will not cover any part of it. Not even the OR costs for the out-of-pocket surgery for egg retrieval in order to make an embryo with donated sperm. Cancer survivors like myself, had to depend on the LiveStrong Foundation to pay for half of an over $20K procedure to freeze my eggs before chemo when I got cancer in my 20s. Chemo can cause infertility. And no, I do NOT have any genetic condition that caused my cancer as this podcast keeps falsely spreading the pseudoscientific notion that CANCER is “genetic.” It’s not. Its caused by environmental toxins. Mmmk. So lets move right along from the Eugenics double-speak. I can’t afford the monthly storage fees for my eggs, and should I be lucky enough to be healthy enough to find someone I want to father my children, it’ll cost approx $15K for EVERY SINGLE ATTEMPT to get pregnant. Each attempt uses 2 eggs. Most women only get 8-13 eggs per egg retrieval (that procedure that requires $5K in fertility drugs & $15K for the surgery).
This is a classist practice. Why not address the fact that FERTILITY care needs to be covered by health insurance rather than criticizing and shaming the practice? It wouldn’t be so profit driven if it were recognized as a human right. Let alone address the fact that women are always blamed for fertility issues, and it’s a miracle everytime a couple figures out its the male’s sperm & can use a sperm donor. This only further ostracizes millions of Americans most intimate and devastating social problems in society, and offers no solutions based on what those dealing with fertility issues believe to be the real problem. It starts and ends with the men & women dealing with fertility. Get it covered by insurance. Did you know if I get an ultrasound just to see if my ovaries are full of eggs, my insurance will make me pay over $300 + the doctor’s visit won’t be covered? If the doctor bills with the wrong IDC code that says “fertility” instead of “pelvic pain,” for the ultrasound, my insurance says “this is medically unnecessary— you pay for it.” And the host wonders why the parents didn’t want to speak for this podcast. Look at how women are treated. And her father’s tears were devastating. Where is the compassion for the parents who did what they had to to give the children they love so much life? This starts going into dark territory when you question the practice altogether. That’s where the Catholics & Evangelicals pounce and try to erase even more of our reproductive rights.”
