I think it’s so sweet your mom recorded everything and I know artists paint and record only what they love. Recording ,though painful to endure being recorded , is a document and testimony forever and has great value. I refused to be photographed as a kid and now I treasure the few photos I have

I really appreciated this family’s story and the history they discovered in Diego’s homeland

WHITE SAVIOR COMPLEX

I really tried with season two of this podcast. While it reveals a complex and charged picture of international adoption and how this came to be in Guatemala. But this adoptive mom/host is extremely exploitive. HOW can you bring mics into these peoples lives and ask sure cruel questions “do you...Read full review »

Wow
I’ve never left a review on a podcast before but this was fantastic. So many moments gave me chills.

Diego and his mother come off very entitled. It almost appears as getting adopted into a white privileged family has been some sort of horrifying experience. There’s validity to much of the trauma, but it also begs the question, would his quality of life been better had he never been adopted?...Read full review »

I have really enjoyed listening to your podcast. I have worked in post adoption services for three decades, watching adoption unfold around the world. Listening to adoptees tell their stories. I appreciate the effort you put into telling your story, which no doubt overlaps the stories of many...Read full review »

I binged this series - found it captivating enough to begin a new episode as often as possible. The background on Guatemalan adoption up until 2007 was fascinating…and heartbreaking. There were times when the mom came across as pretentious and privileged. Despite all the live recordings, I don’t...Read full review »

I found myself touched and repulsed at different times listening to this podcast. The recording of the Guatemalan relatives being used to make a podcast is horrible. I’d like some explanation about this. Are you sending the proceeds of the podcast to Isabel? Does she know she is part of a podcast...Read full review »

A very touching story. As an adoptee I could relate on many levels. Definitely worth your time to listen to Diego’s personal experience.

To know who you are and where you come from is central to the human experience, especially for an adoptee. Diego, who renamed himself Aa Tiko, and his adoptive mother search for answers to questions of who, where, why and what now in this well crafted podcast. International adoption is explored...Read full review »

This series is like three stories in one. By following the family you learn a lot about adoption and Guatemala. Great storytelling. Highly recommend for anyone interested in families.

I cannot believe this woman has been recording her child his entire life & using him for her journalism career. I am an adoptive mother, and one of the first & most important things I was taught is that my child’s story and background is HERS to tell - not mine or anyone else’s. The...Read full review »

I had the pleasure of crossing paths with Laurie Stern and her son Diego in 2014 almost 8 years ago to the day I had started listening to this podcast. We met in Guatemala and I remember Laurie carrying her recording equipment. She was working on a story. This story! Defining Diego. We are both...Read full review »

Incredible audio gathered over 24 years documenting Diego's (AaTiko's) adoption from Guatemala. This podcast asks brave questions about international adoption and isn't afraid if the answers make us squirm. Be sure to listen to what unfolds in episode 8. Tremendous work.Read full review »

International adoption is not an easy topic to tackle. I commend Lorie and Diego for their candidness about such an intimate part of their lives. I really appreciate the deep dive into why it is problematic, to put it mildly, and for Lorie examining how she was complicit in what was essentially...Read full review »

This mother and son documentary truly captures the complexity of international adoption. As an international adoptee mother, this podcast resonated so deeply with our family’s experiences. Very, very well done. 😊

This adoptive mother has been exploiting Diego’s birth family for years. I’m stunned at how she has recorded personal moments and used those in this podcast. And Diego is just as exploitive and pretentious as his adoptive mother. As the mother of internationally adopted children, I wanted to like...Read full review »

I’m on Episode 4 and up until now have been appreciating the care with which this podcast treated its topic, and the candidness with which Diego’s mom has acknowledged her white liberal naïveté (and to some extent, complicity in a form of colonization, though they haven’t really gone there yet),...Read full review »

I did not care for Diego’s attitude and I felt like his mom was way too permissive. Kicking a nurse in the hospital and then blaming her for not being able to take it. Excuse me??? I hope to God he apologized and begged for forgiveness. What a brat.

Defining Diego had me hooked from the first episode! As an adopted person myself, it is rare to find conversation that involves both the adoptee and adoptive parents speaking so honestly together about adoption and the benefits and losses from both perspectives. As an adoptive mom of a Guatemalan son, I really value this podcast. Laura and Diego did an extraordinary job documenting their journey, delving into the Guatemalan adoption industry, and highlighting the struggles of identity formation for the international adoptee. Very well done.

I didn’t want to leave a negative review because this is a personal story and it’s not my place to comment on other people’s lived experience. I’m on Season 2, Episode 2. I can’t believe the stuff she asks Diego’s biological mother. Just add insult to injury, why don’t ya? I don’t know if I can continue listening to this. It makes me cringe!

I’m not saying this wasn’t a well produced show with good content but these folks are just so self serving and pretentious. This entire podcast is problematic and white saviorism, let alone exploitative to the home country of Guatemala. This woman is just trying to make herself feel less guilt.

I was enjoying this podcast on a long drive but had to stop and shout in disbelief that an explanation for why a character acted as they did was that they were “Boomers!” And the actual explanation was a generalization, a wrong generalization, and offensive. I plan to keep listening so I can hear out the full story but I would avoid if you’ve dealt with infertility trauma. Every time there is a commercial break the next segment repeats half of what the last segment just said. Soooo annoying!! It’s basically 5 mins of a story drawn out into 40 mins.

Ok
It’s good, it’s interesting. I feel like they have blinders on a bit. Yes it’s complex BUT should the focus be on a sperm shortage or should it be on why adoption is so prohibitively expensive?
