Funny and insightful, but distorted in its negativity.
While Jim is funny, insightful and has many unique new and useful ways at looking a the problems with the built environment (don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of sprawl either, and chose not live in or visit it), his All-Negative-ALL-the-Time worldview is depressing and at times completely unrealistic. For example, although he claims that this is not true, there ARE useful new energy technologies being developed, technologies which might end up being cheaper and more convenient than oil. Technology is not a form of energy, but technology does allow us to harness energy available in nature, from geothermal to wave energy to sunlight. He also doesn't seem to like anything - he derides modernist architecture, but then derides neo-traditional architecture as well. - so what do you think we should build Jim? This is only one example of how he fails to give listeners any course of positive action or real solutions to strive for, other than to mope around and bitterly complain as he does. All in all he seems highly motivated to bend and shove all facts to conform to his dark view that everyone is an idiot, a wicked idiot needing punishment (except him of course) and we are all doomed. He predicted we were doomed in 2000 with Y2K, and now because of peak oil. I suppose if new energy tech works out well, he'll find some other reason why we sinners are all doomed to be punished for our wickedness and non-Puritanical ways in the future. I do listen to his show most weeks, and sometimes find a lot to like, but I wish he would go easy on the repetive doom claims as my eyes are getting sore from rolling.Read full review »

The KunstlerCast is an enjoyable respite from the trite drivel that dominates the topics of daily issues concerning surburan sprawl and decay. Sadly, that ability or interest in implementing any of Jim's ideas are long since past...Read full review »

James Howard Kunstler brings us the message that we perhaps least want to hear: that our way of life has no future, and if we don't start changing it now, events will change it for us, and there will be much pain involved. Once widely dismissed as a nostalgic crank, his predictions and...Read full review »
