Excellent, broad-based insights into deeper trends
I recently caught up with all 11 (so far? I'm guessing there may be a 12th in the pipeline, maybe on nukes?) End of the World podcasts in a few days when confined to bed and not strong enough to focus even on a book or a film. Collectively they add up to a measured and sophisticated - if complex - perspective on the deeper trends behind the headlines of geopolitics. I particularly enjoyed the accessible treatment of technical subjects such as cryptography, internet governance and big data (Cathy O'Neil is excellent). But also the steadfast commitment of Mary Kaldor and even the scepticism towards metanarratives of 'liberalism' of Pankaj Mishra. I would have given 4.5 stars, but iTunes doesn't offer that option. Why the missing half a star? Occasionally I wish the interviewers would challenge their guests just a little more, not Paxmanesque, but, to pick one example, a case could be made that Edward Luttwak's 'environmental extremists' are the ones urging action on scale to avert the ecofascism that might follow positive feedback loops in climate change. Secondly, it might be my setup (I was listening on Soundcloud) but some of the voice recordings seemed a little compressed and, as a result, not as clear as they might be. But all round, a great source and a great way to spend some time.Read full review »

Since then I have followed up on a number of other episodes and I continue to enjoy the episodes! Great mix of the right duration, interesting division of topics and...Read full review »
