“The idea behind the podcast is good, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The format is simple enough: the host/doctor of the podcast introduces you to the topic, then you hear the patient list their symptoms, and then the doctor breaks it all down (usually there's some back and forth with the patient here).
The first major problem is the patient's voice -- in an attempt to be funny, the patient's voice is incredulously silly -- attempting to elicit laughs in an education podcast is wise, but using silly voices alone doesn't make it funny. The dialoge needs to be funny too, and it isn't. The voice and dialogue of the patients are so immature it makes the podcast feel as it if was created by ten year olds. Instead of being amusing, one is left with the impression that the writers of the podcast harbor feelings of hostility and superiority towards their ignorant patients.
The second major problem is that the podcast makes no attempt to simulate the physician-patient conversation. This is the true problem with the podcast, for what it should be doing is toggling between the physician-patient conversation and the hosts' analysis of what the physician learns from the answer to each question and/or why the physician is asking the questions. Instead, the patient in each of these podcasts conveniently has a thorough grasp on the medical jargon -- thus eliminating the need for the physician to translate the patient's symptoms into medical terms. Why even bother with the patient voice then? Apparently, the only function of the patient is to ridicule. What a wasted opportunity.
The last major problem is that the host/doctor is completely dispassionate. The voice rarely changes -- there's no inflexion of the voice, and there's no sense of passion or drama. What is ironic is that the creators of the podcast aimed to be dynamic educators, but when the opportunity for dynamic presentation comes about the host sounds incredibly bored.
In short, everything is backward with this podcast. What should have been made fun or interesting (a discussion on how to diagnose condition "x") is not, and what should have been presented realistically (the patient's complaints) is presented in a format that does not help to educate the listener.
The writers of this podcast would be wise to re-engineer its format because it simply doesn't work right now.”Read full review »
