Enjoyable, but not perfect.
I've listened to a bunch of different history podcasts and was happy to find this one. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bulgaria, where Ottoman history is still felt very deeply and with a lot of anger, and I'm glad to know more about it. That said, this is not like other history podcasts that endeavor to tell a story in a linear fashion, like the History of Rome or 12 Byzantine Emporers. Rather, each one talks about a particular topic, with varying degrees of accessibility to the non-academic. I consider myself to have an above-average knowledge of Ottoman history as laypeople go (I've spent a lot of time in the former Ottoman Empire, I've been to Istanbul, I've read a lot about both Balkan and Middle Eastern history) and when you lose me, you may want to reconsider your audience. That said, a podcast that's TOO academic is a welcome change from the usual fare. I just wish there were more episodes about the Balkans - I'd love to know more about Balkan nationalism in the 1800s, for example. It's almost impossible to find good information on Balkan history in English, and it's probably even worse in native languages (unless you want to read about how [country] is the most noble and picked upon and everyone else is a monster). Also, I have had no problems understanding anyone's accent thus far.Read full review »

This is a good follow up to the History of Byzantium, which is a good addition to the various Rome histories. I am giving it 4 stars because no one else is covering this era, and not 5 because a few others are better and deserve higher scores.
