Same old same old
This triumvirate format has been done many times before: Left (Michelle), Center (David), and Right (Ross). It's supposed to demonstrate how reasonable, intelligent, and informed people with very divergent political views can have a substantive and civil discussion about controversial topics. This podcast is only half an hour so it's not substantive. You're only going to get the talking points you would expect from the Left, Center and Right. The only surprises come from Ross on the Right. Ross isn't afraid to say he wants the Supreme Court to bring back prayer in public schools and overturn Roe v. Wade in order to counter the Leftist agenda, but there will never be a serious discussion about prayer or abortion. Most tellingly, not once have I heard anyone say, "That's a good point and I think I understand your side better now. Maybe I should consider shifting a little in your direction." I'm passing judgment on a politics podcast, so I should disclose my political views. I'm centrist, but I'm a stickler for realism and pragmatism. We, as a society, need to address all of our most difficult and controversial issues in very direct and concrete ways. In general, Americans are terrible at asking the right kinds of questions, and that's a large part of the problem. We're even worse at answering questions. We can't find good answers if we don't ask good questions. So far, no one in this podcast has asked a good question. They pick a topic and give us their talking points. They say that this podcast is an antidote to the bubble that some people live in, but the people who live in bubbles will not listen to this podcast, and even if they do, it won't change their minds. As I said, even the hosts aren't changing their minds one little bit. Conclusion: Michelle, David and Ross are doing this podcast in order to promote the New York Times and to demonstrate that it's not just a Leftist newspaper. Since it's only thrity minutes and they only "discuss" talking points, it's not as if they have to do a lot of preparation work. I'm just a Joe Shmoe, but I could easily take the place of any of the three hosts. I know what the talking points are.Read full review »

Named after my favorite record by Fugazi (I kid, I kid), this podcast is important work.

As a moderate, I see this as a good step in the right direction. The New York Times has an essential resource of both liberal and conservative columnists. Ross Douthat has published in National Review and been on Jonah Goldberg's The Remnant. Michele Goldberg (no relation to Jonah Goldberg)...Read full review »

It’s really a 2v1 conversation but Ross amazingly keeps a cool demeanor when Michelle is screaming about fascists and Nazis and calls republicans ‘the enemy.’ It is interesting to hear different opinions though.
