“Your podcast was one of the first I found on my sober journey and the only podcast I have returned to over and over again over these last six months. Certain episodes (Why High-Achieving Women Struggle to Set Boundaries, The Advertising of Alcohol to Women, People Pleasing and Over Drinking, Wine Mom Culture, Is Work Driving You to Drink, and Overcoming Perfectionism...just to name a few) have played a pivotal role on my journey, and I am POSITIVE that a large part of the reason I recently felt brave enough to leave my high-powered job was due to your story and the stories told be so many strong, creative, open-minded female guests you HAVE had on your show.
One podcast episode (I believe it was Identity-Based Habits, but I could be wrong) really struck a chord with me because it got me thinking deeply about my truest values and how my work-life balance was in complete discordance with those values. Now I am finally taking care of myself and my family in a way that feels healthy, honest, and in line with the things I care the most about. It's such an incredible relief--and I never, ever, in a million years, would have made both of these huge life changes if it weren't for inspirational women such as yourself who set the course well before me. :)
I also wanted to thank you for your episode on why you do not identify as an alcoholic. I feel EXACTLY the same way as you. I have thought so long and hard about this label, the stigma, the reality of my situation, and the gray area drinking I have been battling for years, and while I absolutely know that I was addicted to alcohol, for all the reasons you stated SO eloquently in your podcast, I am with you: I identify as a non-drinker. :)
Finally, your most recent episode, the conversation with your daughter Lila, was perhaps the greatest podcast episode I have ever listened to.
Literally last night I was talking to my husband about what we will tell my 7-year-old twin daughters about drinking as they grow up. This episode was so beautiful (clearly, you have such a special, trusting, and super honest and nurturing relationship with Lila -- she is so bright and incredibly well spoken and obviously your biggest fan!). It put my mind at ease hearing how openly and honestly you two can discuss drinking. My husband is also a "normie" who can imbibe one or two beers once in a while with no problem, but I am very anxious that my girls have inherited my genes and tendencies. Like you, I agree that it's ridiculous to think my children will never drink, but I have struggled with the big question of what and when to tell the girls about my years-long struggle with wine. Your episode gave me such hope and inspiration, and it just warmed my heart to hear your daughter talk so eloquently about a topic that you obviously have educated her so well on.
Thank you a million times over for recording such a bold, honest, and refreshing episode. I have never heard anything like it, and it was exactly what I needed to hear today...and I will save it because I know over the years I will need to listen to it as a refresher!
You are the best. Please keep doing everything you are doing. We so need women like you to keep raising your voices and eliminating the stigma. :)”Read full review »
