Skepticism...as long as it conforms to your political beliefs
I've listened to the SGU for more years than I care to count. In recent years, it's become a fascinating case study in how scientific skepticism often ends where political beliefs begin. On the hoary traditional targets of skeptics, creationism, homeopathy, perpetual motion devices, etc., you'll get good skeptical discussion centered on scientific method, logical fallacies, the blindness created by motivated reasoning. When it comes to topics where the political leanings of the crew (one of them often proudly talks about being an "activist") clearly dictate their preferred conclusions, all of these tools of skepticism almost comically go out the window. Listening to the skeptics guide has encouraged me to be more well informed about a variety of subjects. Alot of things that are simply mentioned in passing sometimes lead me to hours of interesting research. It's a good starting point.Read full review »
