Interview with Dr. Jill Stein - disappointed
I've listened to many episodes of this show and have really enjoyed and learned from the guests interviewed to date, but when I saw this latest episode in my feed, it really disappointed me. Promoting the idea of a three party system every time it's a presidential election cycle is really harmful given the current national political climate. These conversations need to be had on an ongoing basis, not only when it's convenient. Votes for Dr. Stein will in effect be a vote for Donald Trump because of the Electoral College, full stop. Until the Electoral College is dismantled, we cannot be entertaining the idea that voting third party candidates is justified and actually helps our democracy. Period. This isn't that I don't agree or like any of the policies Dr. Stein is campaigning for, but rather that this is putting the cart before the horse. We don't like the two party system and the criticisms are all valid. But it needs to be dismantled by a Constitutional Amendment, not by bemoaning it and still "voting [your] conscious" or casting a protest vote every four years. Donald Trump is a threat to the very existence of the democratic system we DO have right now, and giving Dr. Stein a platform at this point in history is incredibly dangerous. I'm very disappointed that Hala has given this idea space at this time and it is detrimental to the cause of democracy we all say we hold dear. Make no mistake, if people vote third party instead of voting for Kamala Harris and shift the votes of the Electoral College, we will have elected an authoritarian into office who will do everything he can to stay in power as long as he wants. The video of him saying he will "fix it so you don't have to vote anymore" was not a joke. When people say who they are, believe them. Again-- this conversation needs to be had, but now is not the time. I would challenge Dr. Stein to start advocating for a Constitutional Amendment first, instead of serving her own ego and running as a third party candidate. Oh and by the way, maybe check where her donations come from too before she promotes herself as not giving in to corporate interests.Read full review »
