Countercultural but true!
There’s so many norms in the fitness industry that’s just culture more than anything and not backed by science or data. I love how Dr. Shannon is not afraid to challenge what’s commonly accepted and break down what’s actually backed by research vs. what might work for some people personally but not necessarily everyone. After listening to a few episodes, some of her examples might get a little repetitive (like why step ups load your muscles better than squats), but I do find that I need the repetition to help combat my “instincts” (which is just years of being ingrained to think that squats are the end all-be all plus continued exposure to those messages from the fitness industry). She emphasizes the importance of listening to your body and teaches you how to tailor workouts to your needs. The tip on assessing your mobility before and after a workout so you can evaluate whether you’ve overexerted your body is gold! I love how she empowers people with knowledge to get stronger with healthier joints independent of her fitness program. You can tell that she’s interested in helping people and not just trying to get new clients.
