Even without Helen Lewis. Andrew Marr alone is worth the price of admission.

Excellent podcast with Nazir Afzal. Its all been about racism and male violence, and nothing abou the three innocent victims. Absolutely shameful.

We can all agree that more quality social homes would be great, but ask they bloke how he intend to fund them. As ever that is the key problem not a lack of people who think it would be nice (even some of those horrible evil Tories would support it if money was easy to come by).

Listening to recent episodes of The New Statesman podcast and The News Agents podcast, the presenters most likely to pour cold water on Kamala Harris’ bid for the US presidency are the old white guys, Marr and Sopel. I hate to think what Campbell and Stewart are making of all of this over on...Read full review »

Really enjoying the podcast. Love the honesty and genuine interest that the commentators display. Wish the episodes were longer.

Used to be a listener, but hearing Hannah Barnes use the podcast as a platform to spread misinformation and half truths about the trans community without even an attempt by her colleagues to push back at her bigotry means I have unsubscribed. A shame considering the good contributions of some...Read full review »

The recent addition of Hannah Barnes and Andrew Marr has given gravitas to this podcast and I now listen regularly. This has been a relief, as since Helen Lewis had left it became dominated by correspondents who cannot possibly have had any living memory of the political events of which they speak.

Very good. Great contributors.

Used to love this show. The new host’s mindless transphobia makes it unlistenable

I’m relatively new to podcasts and have started listening to this one since the election was announced. Enjoyable, with presenters who aren’t trying to be personalities or imagining themselves living the West Wing dream. No tiresome effing and blinding either, just interesting discussion with...Read full review »

Please sack or get rid of that awful Hannah Barnes. She adds no insight or any value to the podcast, on the contrary she actively makes me want to unsubscribe. I want to listen to analysis from a left wing/social democratic angle not what Mumsent thinks.

Dismayed by the current reporting of gender issues. I agree that these questions require nuance but hosting Hannah Barnes as a nuanced impartial figure without critique or caveat from her co-presenter is unbelievable. The most recent episode was a total nadir. Whatever your stance on these...Read full review »

This podcast, one of just too many by far, is deteriorating markedly. The standard of analysis is very poor indeed. The resident commentators lack political and historic insight and are at times embarrassingly inarticulate. They simply have nothing to say that’s worth hearing. The paper remains...Read full review »

The New Statesman’s lurch to the right has unfortunately impacted the quality of journalism on the podcast. Presenters will report something a politician has said and say something like “sounds like a good idea.” There’s no attempt at analysis or critical appraisal. Analysis of the polls is good...Read full review »

It’s difficult to overstate what a decline this podcast has had over three years. The only person worth listening to now is off on mat leave. How has the New Statesman managed to have the most unimpressive political team in decades, perhaps ever, just a the “left” is on the rise? Truly amateur.

Why do they keep changing the music? It is rubbish now. Please can we have ‘Devil with the Devil’ back?

But whenever the subject of the Cass report comes up, the New Statesman fails to include any trans voices or perspectives. The recent interview with Cass and its writeup by Hannah Barnes fawn over her and the report uncritically rather than making any attempt to challenge the report’s many and...Read full review »

the introduction of podcasts paid for by large corporations where the vested interests are obvious (on smoking, by philip morris, on pharmaceuticals, by daiichi sankyo, on trade unions, by uber) is a very strange decision. a shadow of what it was under stephen bush, used to be one of the most...Read full review »

update, the music just keeps getting ever more bizarre, I’m becoming rather concerned about whoever it is who’s choice it is, I think they need help. Why two introductions? Why the truly awful ‘jackanory’ happy, happy, music? It makes it sound as if it’s aimed at ten year olds. Other than that I...Read full review »

“By virtue of being an immigrant you’re focused on survival rather than taking part in civic society” - paraphrasing from your last episode. Can we get someone who actually knows people who have moved here from other countries to talk about these issues pls? Lost it at “these types of people”.

Regular longtime listener. Always appreciate your analysis, though this episode betrayed the over reliance on “Westminster Bubble” armchair chat.

Of course the NS would have a plastic waste episode unironically sponsored by Coca Cola. I thought it must be sarcasm. But here we are. A joke, indeed. The soda industry is what popularized the idea of “recycling” so they could stop collecting and washing their glass bottles and instead put the...Read full review »

I simply repeat my comments about your partnership with Google: If the New Statesman wants to be a credible left-leaning publication (and podcast), they need to refrain from partnering with global top 10 corporates with global outsized influence. You look like a puppet with this kind of...Read full review »

The episode about the Left and Isreal was superb. Full of emotion, academic rigour and nuanced politics. It has stayed with me, so moving and so essential for me to build my understanding.

Always listen to this, and particularly enjoyed the recent Westminster Transformed episode about culture and wellbeing. Great to hear politics/current affairs get out of London and focus on the things which actually matter to our quality of life away from GDP numbers etc. more of that please!

I used to enjoy but now you get about 4-5 podcasts a week, which is too much and much of it isn’t good. I love Armando Iannucci, but I don’t want to hear what he has to say about politics week after week or some thinly veiled ad about electric vehicles. I know the New Statesman is notoriously financially unstable but even with generous amounts of goodwill any listener will struggle to sit through what is almost half of an episode's runtime being filled by adverts. Enjoyed the discussion 11th sept 2023, but one comment. You didn’t actually discuss wealth taxes, capital gains can easily be avoided because rich people can choose when to realize gains or simply delay if needed. Wealth tax = % annual tax paid on net assets eg (made up) tax free allowance 1m,...Read full review »

Unwavering bootlicking and hypocritical posturing in absolute support of The Labour Right. The mental gymnastics on show is of an Olympian standard. No different to hideous right-wing newspapers, only batting for a blue side in their red away strip.

Does feel like just a branch of the BBC where they’re still OK with polished accents. Not quite the same level of quality as the Spectator podcast, but they well be my bias. Certainly not in the same league as the Economist podcasts.

When you had one of the few pod cast theme tunes which didn’t sound like it had been knocked up in 5 minutes by a kid with a kazoo, why after Stephen has left of all times, replace it with something that sounds like it ought to be the backing track to a Pixar movie about a sloth, a hippo and a...Read full review »

Oh, I do miss Stephen Bush: despite his serial sentence un-finishing. I don’t miss the old music, and the new sound is perfect.
