This is the sound of freedom ringing.
As a young high school kid, I had a strange option that I know now many didn’t have. I had the opportunity to take African-American History to fulfill my American History credits. So I had seeds planted then that many other white Americans never have had. I got exposed to deeper criticism of the foundation of the United States, not to undermine it, but to sharpen the meanings of it. This work by Ms Jones and the rest is stirring up such an important and striking truth that it’s put that past education of mine into the front of my mind. The core statement, that black America forged the freedom this country was built on, rings so true to me. This is all beautifully made into audio. Can’t wait for the rest!

If our democracy has any future at all, we Americans must understand and reconcile our past. This is an extraordinary and complex work, an archeology of the real story of our people, with all of its brutality and humanity. Urgent, necessary, and deeply moving.

I love the inclusion of personal family history into the narrative. I’m not so patiently waiting for the next episode.
