I am an American
I saw an interview on one of the news channels with the author of this piece and she said that this piece helped her to become more patriotic. I was very skeptical of how that could possibly be the case. In listening to it I understand and I think that I could be more patriotic as well. This is the country my ancestors built and that flag represents them and the struggle to make this country live up to is promise. I wish I could post an explanation on the flag so people could understand what it means to me to fly a flag. The thing that stand out to me the most in this piece was when she describes how she had to pick a random African country for her school project. I didn’t have to do that project but my two sons do. It has been a very painful experience as a mother walking him through this project and having them feel like they don’t have the right background to do assignment. I’m going to use this piece to help demonstrate to my school the impact this project has on the students in their charge. It affirms that the project is not the most inclusive of all students experience. Thank you for this series I can’t wait for new episodes!!!

We need to hear all the history, not just the white washed version of history. It’s painful. We are obligated as Americans to know all our history. “This Land” from Crooked Media is also worth mentioning as another part of our history that we don’t often here. Thank you All.
