“Been a loyal listener since stumbling across this podcast and finding John was also yelling at #27 through the tv. My first memory as a Niners fan goes back to 1998 when Garrison Hearst busted that crazy overtime run against the Jets.
I am from the Bay Area and my parents are fans, but the player that really got me hooked on the Niners was Merton Hanks. I did his “chicken dance” so many times during a flag football game that I hurt my neck and missed the next day of school. Fast forward to when I’m at college as a freshman walk on and was presented with a limited jersey selection after making the team. Without hesitation I request Merton’s #36, as well as #39 if I didn’t get my first choice.
While the times have mostly been tough throughout the course of my life as a Niners fan, I couldn’t be more excited that the current squad has fun characters like my boy, Merton!”
