Best in the business.
Mike / Steve, I’m a huge fan of the pod and a regular listener, indeed for many fights, even if I’ve watched live at the arena or on TV, I go back and listen to your fight commentary to gain a new perspective, thanks for all of your efforts and keep up the good work. Really pleased for Joshua that he managed to overcome his demons in Saudi and he produced a hugely disciplined boxing display for 12 rounds, the like of which, I’ll admit, I didn’t think he was capable of for such a length of time against an aggressor like Ruiz. I actually watched the fight in an Irish sports bar in Rome - it punctuated a romantic weekend away with my wife celebrating her 40th birthday (has to be said only one of us was keen to watch the boxing!) – the screen showing the fight was excellent but, as the feed was Italian-language, they didn’t play any audio, which helped make it a slightly strange atmosphere. The crowd was definitely pro-Joshua but interest in the fight waned when it became apparent there were going to be few fireworks and that the Brit was basically keeping Ruiz at arm’s length for 12 rounds. I was one of the few who retained interest throughout (along with a fairly dangerous looking doorman who looked as though he’d got himself into a few scrapes over the years!). After AJ had boxed his way to a near-shutout points victory I walked away feeling pleased although not exhilarated and my initial impression is that it was a good victory if not overall redemption for him. Upon listening to your post-fight reaction (and your efforts to keep Richie from falling asleep) I reflected that, collectively, you were giving him a lot more credit than I had done and am certainly prepared to bow to your greater judgement, particularly due to the vantage point that you had at ringside over a soundless feed in a packed Irish bar in the eternal city! However Buncey asked Mike if he felt AJ’s performance was at all discredited by the weight and the performance of his opponent, Mike said he did not but here is where I have to disagree. The old adage that you can only beat what is in front of you remains a true one and AJ certainly did that emphatically, not to mention with great skill but the challenge of appraising a performance, in any sport, is always calculating the balance between the victor’s prowess and the loser’s inadequacies. The word “disrespect” is a strong one but not too strong for how Andy Ruiz approached this contest. If Joshua was embarrassed in New York then the Mexican should be even more so for the condition that he arrived in for this fight. It surely cannot be disputed that his immobility contributed significantly to the ease with which Joshua was able to stay out of range and jab his head off his shoulders. Undoubtedly Joshua still deserves immense credit, especially for the mental challenges that he managed to overcome in Saudi. Being bashed up and floored four times the way he was in New York would have left scars that could have easily been reopened and he showed great courage, in addition to the obvious boxing and tactical planning that had been undertaken in preparation for the rematch. Massive kudos to him and his team for this and you have to feel he is now an improved fighter moving forward in a career that is very much back on track. I do feel that some of the key questions that have lingered for some time over Joshua remain, notably his punch resistance and endurance when forced to really fight. They were not answered in Saudi, simply because the overweight Ruiz simply wasn’t in sufficient condition to ask them but if the fights we all want to see are made in 2020 and beyond, they will be and should prove fascinating viewing. Looking forward to following them with 5 Live Boxing.

This is current my favourite podcast. Buncey and Mike give great insight into the world of boxing. I would be interested to hear an episode specifically on promoters and how they operate their business.
