Description
Sometimes a costume can tell as much of a story as the character wearing it. As the lead costume designer for the hit Amazon Prime Series, Them, Mari-An Ceo is a seasoned wardrobe stylist crafting one of a kind looks to elevate the stories of the unheard. The series depicts a black family’s journey from North Carolina to East Compton during the great migration in the 1950s; unveiling the heart wrenching details of one African-American family’s attempt to escape the horrors of the South as they strive for a better life. Through the vivid depictions of one family’s struggle to freedom, Ceo’s ornate wardrobe designs create a world all on its own --  illuminating the power of fashion to tell any story.  In this week’s episode, Kirsten Holtz Naim sits down with Mari-An Ceo to discuss the underlying social and political themes discussed in Them, her personal connection to fashion projects, and the storytelling powers of costume design.
