Have only listened to the intro and first two episodes...
...but so far I can highly recommend this podcast to anyone looking for an in-depth history of jazz. Arik Devens is a compelling storyteller with a deep, deep knowledge of the origins and stories of this music. I've long loved jazz and Devens' trip down Dixieland and the African origins of jazz has opened my mind further. I hope this series goes on a long time, because it has the potential to be a beautiful and epic overview of a music that has so many stories behind it. One of the nice things is a) Devens' liberal use of samples of the music (the idea is that each episode is dedicated to a pivotal album) and b) an approach to the music that doesn't get bogged down in music theory (scales, chords, harmonic progressions, and so on). This makes the podcast very accessible to people who fear jazz to be 'difficult'. Highly recommended. Can't wait to follow it in the coming months.
