The 35th Session of UNESCO's General Conference was marked by the election of Irina Bokova as Director-General of the Organization. Ms Bokova is the first woman and the first representative of Eastern Europe to be named to the post. At her investiture on 23 October she expressed pride at this and spoke of the "new humanism" she intends to promote.
