“Top Shelf! I’m studying Aristotle and his breakdown, was super helpful! Further, his pronunciation of all of the greek names in Greek, seems to help us feel closer to the characters. It’s helpful because as the audience we get the feeling too that Mickey really likes the protagonists of the Alexander and Philip story. This is refreshing because it seems to be fashionable nowadays to look back at the depictions of these figures, extract them out of their time, customs, environment, family values, and then assess them to be sociopathic jerks like based on our time and values. This is modern approach is sort of boring, and because Mickey doesn’t do this, the show is great.
It feels like having a beer with a friend how Mickey presents, but while the tone and mood of the show is casual, Mickey’s study, focus, and excitement about Alexander is anything but casual. This is great because Mickey doesn’t merely ‘fanboy’ Alexander, but it is apparent that he has really put a lot of thought into trying to understand what the challenges seems like if you were Alexander. I’m reading the primary sources as a personal project and Mickey’s analysis has dug me out of quite a few questions already! I’ve gotten so I listen to the show when it comes out and usually get impatient and listen to some of the back episodes in between. If you liked Dan Carlin’s King of Kings episodes, History of Persia podcast, or are interested in Ancient Greek and Rome, give this podcast a listen!”
