The Nikon D500 comes more than 6.5 years after the D300, Nikon’s last semi-pro APS-C body. It may have been worth the wait as the D500 may now be the go-to camera for sports and nature. By using the same autofocus sensor as the full-frame D5, Nikon has given the D500 nearly 100% phase-detect autofocus coverage in an APS-C body. Coupled with a huge buffer (so long as you use an XQD memory card), the D500 can shoot continuously up to 200 RAW files at 10 frames per second. And while a...

The Lumix GX80 (GX85 in North America) is Panasonic’s latest 16MP micro four-thirds (MFT) mid-range camera. Essentially the same body as the GX7 and smaller than the GX8, the new camera includes excellent in-body 5-axis image stabilization, a tiltable (but not fully articulating) touch-sensitive LCD, 4k 30p video and in-camera battery charging. Although he’s disappointed in the non-OLED electronic viewfinder, Gordon is particularly impressed with some of the new 4k video-for-stills modes...

The a6000, launched two years ago, has been one of Sony’s greatest hits in digital still photography. It remains one of the kings of continuous autofocus, particularly among mirrorless cameras. Sony’s long-awaited update, the a6300, has primarily been enhanced in one area: the autofocus. To an otherwise similar APS-C sensor, Sony increased the count of phase-detect autofocus points from 179 to 425, allowing more-accurate object tracking across nearly the entire frame. Other notable...

The Fujifilm X70 is a smaller, less-expensive X100T-style camera. That means Fuji’s excellent 16MP APS-C X-Trans sensor, a fixed 28mm f/2.8 full-frame equivalent lens (vs. the 35mm FFEQ on the X100T) in a package that’s just a bit too large to fit in most pockets. The X70’s sensor has embedded phase-detection autofocus points that deliver excellent autofocus including face- and eye-detection. The X70 has no viewfinder (although one can be fitted to the hotshoe), but is the first X-series...

The Fujifilm X-Pro2 is the company's new flagship X-series model, replacing the four year-old X-Pro1. The X-Pro2 occupies a unique niche as an interchangeable-lens autofocus rangefinder camera. It's that improved hybrid optical/electronic range/viewfinder that truly sets this camera apart from any competition. The X-Pro2 brings a new 24MP APS-C X-trans sensor, weather sealing, dual SD card slots, phase-detection autofocus, an improved ISO control and a new joystick for AF-point...

To kick off 2016, Doug taps Gordon's extensive knowledge of all-things MFT to bring you this roundup of the best micro four thirds lenses. Starting with kit zooms, they go through fisheyes, wide angle, normal, telephoto, macro and extreme telephoto glass. Should you buy the kit lens with your next MFT body? Maybe an upgraded kit zoom? What about primes? And that most question question of all, "What's the next lens I should buy?" If you're a micro four thirds shooter, Doug and Gordon...

The Canon Powershot G9X is the latest, smallest and least-expensive addition to Canon's GX line. Using the same 1" sensor as the G3X, G5X, G7X and the Sony RX100 mk III, the G9X is the smallest and most-pocektable 1" sensor camera on the market. While you give up larger-camera features such as an electronic viewfinder, tiltable LCD and longer zoom range -- the G9X's zoom is 3x -- you get good image quality and a touch-screen LCD in a small package for only US$500. Put through its paces,...

The Sony a7S II is the second high-ISO "S" model and the sixth overall in the company's a7 line of full-frame mirrorless cameras. It shares the improved body with the other "mark II" models (better weather resistance, in-body image stabilization, enhanced controls and a new electronic viewfinder) and uses the same 12MP sensor as the previous A7s. With a maximum ISO of 409,600, it's very usable at ISO 25,600 and in some cases to 102,400. The autofocus is still contrast-only (no...

Fujifilm's X-T10 is a great low-cost entry into Fuji's line of X-Trans sensor interchangeable-lens cameras. You can now get the same great mage quality of the company's flagship X-T1 for just half the price. In fact, for only US$1,000 you can get the new X-T10 with a good-quality 18-55mm kit zoom, which is US$300 less than even the non-interchangeable X100T. All with that great Fujifilm image quality. Compared to its bigger-brother X-T1, the new X-T10 has the same sensor, same processor,...

The OM-D E-M10 II brings 5-axis in-body image stabilization to Olympus' smallest micro four-thirds body. The camera also features an excellent OLED electronic viewfinder, much-improved controls, a fast electronic shutter and a new focus-bracketing (focus-stacking) mode. At US$649, it's a strong contender as an entry-level or backup MFT camera, but how does it rank as compared to the superior E-M5 II (US$350 more, weather sealed, fully articulating LCD), the Fujifilm X-T10, Lumix G7 or the...
