Choldin has worked to improve library services in more than 70 countries, promoting new technology and intellectual freedom. Winner of the 2000 Pushkin Gold Medal for her work promoting Russian culture and education, she has been studying Russia for more than 50 years. She discusses writers and censors—and writers as censors—in imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, and the post-Soviet era.
